That's criminal. 5 second rule. Put those onions right back on the burger, man!

Here she is poking her nose into the cabin trying to see what we might be cooking.

Chocolater Lab

Post by Warren Kaplan »

Marianna,
Looks like a beautiful chocolate lab. But she's got enough chocolate on her right now to last a lifetime. Don't let her get near any more!

She is a lab (yes chocolate) with an appetite to match but her owner keeps her very healthy by not giving her people food at all.

She's always looking for food anyway and it is hard not to give in but she's healthier for it and still has her girlish figure at 6 1/2 years old.

However, that didn't stop her from taking a slab of halibut off the counter (and making it disapper) when I briefly turned my back.

Muttluks question

Post by Tod Mills »

Dasein668,

Do your muttlucks stay on your dog's feet pretty well?

I bought something similar for my pooch, Bill, from Cabela's. They are neoprene booties with rubber soles and velcro straps that you wind around the "ankles" and while they are great as long as they stay on, they don't stay on long. After just a little movement, they slowly slip down.... :(

Curious how I totally forget to mention onions...since I love 'um myself. Onions are very toxic. Any amout over 0.5% of the dog's weight can wreak havoc with the dog's hemoglobin and cause severe anemia (and worse) anywhere from within a few hours to over a week. The dog can seem fine for a few days and then start to go down hill rapidly.
0.5% of body weight is a very small amount. For a 50 pound dog that's only a 1/4 pound of onion or 4 ounces. That's the size of a medium onion. For you sailors with little 15 pound dogs, you know what that means. So, if you are cookin' burgers on the grill in a nice anchorage while having a few gin and tonics (ummm...yummy) make sure those onions are in a closed container that the dog can't tip over and that any onions that fall out of your mouth onto the deck while stuffing your face are picked up and tossed overboard right away! Then you can go right back to abusing yourself with your 3rd burger! But they taste sooo good! :D

DOG BOOTS

Post by Oswego John »

Hi all,

A friend of mine races sled dogs. Ice can pack up between the dogs' toes and do harm. He and other pros use a special boot with a nonskid surface to prevent injury to the dogs. I have no details about these boots but whatever they use, they stay on for many miles of hard running FWIW

Yes the Muttlucks work great. They may be what Oswego John was referring to, in fact, as they were originally developed for sled dogs. The muttlucks have a wide elastic cuff like you would find on a rugby shirt or similar, coupled with a velcro strap. We have only had a problem with them coming off a couple of times before we figured out how to be sure that they were properly on his feet. The muttlucks also have a grippy surface (like a faux leather material) which helps with the traction on deck surfaces.

I looked for some other photos showing the muttlucks... this is the best I could come up with.

Pictures of Nemo's first sail

Post by mahalocd36 »

I guess he's a keeper :-) He made it through the first weekend on the boat without drowning or getting
seasick. Actually he kinda liked it.

After he first got on board. Not too sure about this:
