sealing epoxy repairs

Post by John Halporn »

I have used WEST epoxy and fiberglass cloth to repair a hole below the waterline and the entire aft deck of my Typhoon. What should I put over the epoxy/glass before the paint in each location? I am going to use a modified epoxy antifouling paint below and a one-part topsides enamel above; one product to seal both locations would be awesome! Thanks, JH

The West System instructions recommend at least one coat of unthickened epoxy over their tan microlight filler to seal it because they say some solvents can soften it. No similar admonition is provided for some of their other mixtures. Probably would be a good idea to seal up the below the waterline repair anyway with some West mixed with 422 Barrier coat additive.

It isn't necessary to put anything over the hull repair area before bottom painting unless the rest of the hull is barrier coated. If it is, then you will need to barrier coat the repair area before applying the bottom paint. As for the topsides painting you will need to use the appropriate primer stipulated by the particular paint manufacturer of the topside paint you've chosen.
