CD33 - Femme du Nord

Post by John Danicic »

I can add to this post.

My brothers CD33, Femme du Nord on Lake Superior. He will be crossing over that cold lake next week from the sunny Apostle Islands of Wisconsin to the frigid north shore town of Grand Marais, MN. Summer must be coming, Femme du nord heads north.

Good journey to you Paul and I will drop off that box of scrap wood for your heater.

This is a cape dory at my yard, I had been admiring it for a month not even realizing it was a cape dory till I talked to the owner, then I looked at the serial number on the transom, and sure enough its a cape dory.

Its a typhoon but an open cockpit model, owner said about 30 were made. They bought it as a derelict about 2 years ago and obviously did an amazing job restoring it, its really a strickingly beautiful boat.

I forgot to get the owners name, very nice lady though, I asked her if I could take photos to share here, so here they are:

<img width="540" src="http://www.ladypauline.com/cd1.jpg">

<img width="540" src="http://www.ladypauline.com/cd2.jpg">

<img width="540" src="http://www.ladypauline.com/cd3.jpg">

That paint job is a hand done roll and tip job with a 1 part polyeurithane paint, very impressive in my opinion. Having just used the same exact paint (interlux brightside) to paint my transom I was amazed at their results.

Even though its not an in water photo, I certainly think its an impressive looking cape dory, and a rare open cockpit one as well.

That open Typhoon is gorgeous. Please post pictures when it's in the water or better yet under sail. Wow, those pictures made my day, thanks. Tim

By the way, don't let the little notes informing you that the webmaster has restricted the display size of your photos stop you from including them. It's all part of the learning process.

If your photos/images are larger than 540 pixels wide, you'll have to restrict their size. This means using the HTML coding (the < img > tag), rather than the BBCoding (the [ Img ] tag). You'll find the instructions in the "Sticky: Include a photo or graphic in a message posting....how to..." which you'll find in the "About this Board" discussion forum. Anyway, here's the proper syntax (don't include the word "Code"):

Code: Select all

I think I go in the water the day before she does, so likely I wont be able to accomidate this request. The owner did say she has been to this board before though, so perhaps I can convince her to to return and post some more pictures. I for one would love to see some "before" pictures, from how she described it, it was in pretty sorry shape 2 years ago. I was really impressed by the boat, its one of those you see and you just imagine how much you would love to sail it for a day, you can see yourself in it, and this was before I realized it was even a cape dory.

We CD27s are quite deceptive. Yesterday I tried out my brand spanking new Doyle 140% genoa. The wind never got above 8 knots and I was going against the current (or slack a best). Just take a look at the top number on the right. That was my speed yesterday in 8 Knots of wind. How's that for the first sail of the season. Give a CD27 a little wind and she'll take off!!

A Cape Dory I ran across on last summer's Chesapeake Bay cruise. I had just left the Patuxent and come down to the Potomac to poke around in the creeks.....
