Your photos prompted me to comment on photo gear on board. I have a "stash" of SLR cameras and lenses that I started collecting in the late 1960's. Medium priced stuff, all Konica, and all well-cared for. In fact I like these cameras quite a bit and am still adding to the collection.

For about 8 or so years some of the cameras lived on board and were carried offshore for 12 months of the year. The end result was that one of the camera bodies corroded and eventually had to be disposed of.

All of the bodies and lenses were stowed in Ziplok bags when not in use. The Ziploks were stowed in a padded camera bag. The gear was never brought on deck when there was a possibility of salt spray (OK, well almost never), but even so it suffered some hardships.

Aside from the very expensive water-proof hard cases that are almost impossible to stow on a small boat, does anyone have any additional ideas on caring for and stowing this kind of gear in harsh conditions?

We use "dry bags" for storing items that must stay dry. Here is a link to LL Bean but you can find them in most sporting good stores like EMS, REI and probably even Walmart.

We had lots of fun building it, but we don't recommend these plans. It dosn't seem to be well balanced. With one person in it, the boat sits well, however, with two, the boat is either bow or stern heavy. It still works fine, and we enjoyed the process, it is 1/8 ply with enough epoxy to build a Typhoon (we got a little carried away). We used west system, and it was easy to work with. We used boat yard resin or something like that (polyester) as a final coat and be warned, this stuff is only good for about 6 months after it is manufactured, so be careful! When it gets old, it dosn't set up.

Hi Mollie and Josh. We'll look for you this season since we too are moored off Winter Island. We have a CD30K - "Jenny May" that is the second boat you'll see to starboard coming back in.
