CD 25 Holding Tank....A question I never wanted to ask
After the first sail of the season in STAR, CD 25 #836, I noticed a small puddle in the port settee locker. The water appeared to be coming from below the holding tank. On STAR, there is a wooden box in the port settee locker, 24 inches long, 14 inches wide and conforming to the curve of the hull. There are what appear to be nails along the visible edges of the box. The holding tank is either inside this box or is the box. I also discovered the bracket which holds the "L" fitting for the vent line on the top of the tank was completely rusted out. It appeared to have been held in place by screws into the box. The visible wood in the area of the vent fitting was damp.
I would appreciate any info on original design of CD 25 holding tank....type of material....was it installed inside a wooden box....or was it a wooden box with some sort of liner (sounds weird).....how was box attached to hull.....and any help on effecting a holding tank replacement without spilling the residual stuff all over the boat. UGH !!!!!

Just curious, my 1978 cd25 had the holding tank under the v-berth. Is yours a 25-D?

The holding tank on my 25 and on almost everyones that I know of, is under the V berth. It is possible that CD made a change at the end of the production run. Yours is close to the last one made.
I would guess that a PO moved the holding tank for some reason. I would start by seeing what is now under the V berth and determine if it was a good refit.
It could be they had something in mind that you will never be able to determine or it may be obvious what they were trying to do. Since it sounds like the box you described is shot you may want to go back to the V berth for weight & trim

CD 25 Holding Tank
Thanks for the info....STAR is a CD 25. It appears that a PO custom built some type of wooden box, lined it with glass and placed the box in the port settee locker. I was able to lift one side of the box with a pry bar so I think it should be easy to get out after I remove the locker top/settee wooden bench.
The area under the vee berth is empty and used for storage. The next problem will be locating a source for a vee berth holding tank. Any ideas ????

you will find descriptions of plastic thickness available variations or offerings visions of 'liners' or stands or holders with foam and suspension and the occasional composting toilet i swear on the grave of the fast furry freak brothers vw bus.
The v tank seems to have been used for many models 25' - 36' I believe, at least.
The v tank installed when new is likely a kracor #2-6256
Kracor model # B486 is the popular replacement
Vrankly ....my v tank krakor tag says model #1-6067
serial # 77313
24 gal.

Made for lavatory sink supply with forward 2" fill and 1" rear supply. This may be a insufficient configuration for holding tank, hence, the ultimate odorless quest for a plumbing solution.
If you can get some kind person who has this index at finguretip
to draw a schematic for the plumbing unwashed manys the soul would rest
bet there ain't many faux clivus multrums out there

Regarding the "Holding Tank....A question I never wanted to ask". I just returned from a visit to a boat which was billed and what I believe to be a Cape Dory 25 (not a CD25D).
Its head was removed: There was a large about 2 or 1-1/2 inch gate valve (yes, gate valve and not sea cock) in the port after quarter bearth (as is yours) with the outlet hose cut off. Obviously this was the discharge hose. In the port foward quarter birth was an about 1/2 valve. this was obviously the intake.
This boat is being billed as a CD25 and I believe it to be one. Accordingly, your observations about your CD25 are consistant with what I observed with this boat.
I hope this is helpful. I expect to put in an offer on the boat. Let's hope that it's accepted as you seem to be a great bunch of guys (and gals) and I hope to join this board as an owner.

On STAR CD 25 #836, there is no overboard discharge for either the head or holding tank. There is a 1 1/2 inch pump out fitting on the port side main deck about one foot forward of the winch. All the stuff must be removed via the pumpout fitting.
