A sad day for "The Rose"

Post by bobc »

In 2000 I had the opportunity to sail aboard the tall ship HMS Rose. It was the trip of a lifetime. I'll never forget setting sail from Halifax in a parade of other tall ships that were part of Tall Ships 2000.

Although there were rumors of a movie, little did we suspect that the Rose would never return to service as a sail training vessel. The 2000 season was to be her last. We had all hoped that after her role as the Surprise in "Master and Commander" that she would someday find her way back to the role for which she was so well suited.

Today it was announced that Russell Crowe has purchased the Rose for the purpose of turning it into a floating restaurant and nightclub in Cabo San Lucas. It seems that she will never sail again .

I sure hope that this is some twisted April Fool's joke!

The Rose

I know the Rose from a slightly different perspective. At the launching of the Amistad she was moored in the Mystic River. It was an early spring launch so there were very few large boats but hundereds of assorted small craft in the harbor. We were amongst them and in looking for a good vantage point with something to tie up to we found the stern of the Rose to be perfect. We sat tied to her rudder for the lowering. At the end someone on the Rose leaned over the stern rail and informed us that we might want to get underway as she would be fireing her cannons over the stern! I guess we were asked to leave at gun point. We moved off and she did fire her guns. It was asll very impressive. It would be a shame to have such a vessel permanently tied to a dock no matter what the pupose. There just aren't enough tall ships sailing in this world, Steve.

Now seems like a good time to break out the keel-haul tackle.

From the Rose website: http://tallshiprose.org/

Those of you who viewed the website on April 1, 2005, may have seen the "announcement" that Russell Crowe is purchasing the Rose and converting it into a floating nightclub. Rest assured, it was an April Fool's joke. Thanks for being a good sport!

Hmmm.... Russell Crowe converting the Rose into a nightclub, adding a deck for a dance floor, and having all female waitresses serving Polynesian food like Hooters meets Outback, changing the figurehead to a Kangaroo.

I guess it wasn't as much of a stretch as I imagined when I wrote it. I was shocked at how many people fell for it.
