1979CD 27 engine mystery!
After two years on the hard (while I was recuperating from an illness) my CD sat uncovered in the marina yard at Shelter Island. When the yard started it up for a potential buyer, it spat a big black splat out the exhaust about 6 feet long. The engine is in great shape with around 400 hours since brand new in 1979. Could it be condensation from the exhaust sitting for so long or possibly water leaking into the exhaust?? Has anyone experienced such an event? I'd appreciate any information you diesel mavens may have to put my mind at rest. Thanks, Tom Law email is motwal@nyc.rr.com And I'll watch the board!

Black Splat
Tom,
Water is supposed to be in there--that's the purpose of the water-lift muffler. I presume that the exhaust system was winterized with antifreeze when it was laid up two years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if the color of the mixture of seawater, antifreeze and time turned the whole thing black.

Yard broker?
Geez it would have been nice if the yard would have tried to start the thing once before the potential buyer showed up for the big black splat. It says alot for the engine that it started right up after all that time but it would seem like you would want to be sure before a buyer was interested and present. Good luck with your sale and may your health improve to the point that you regret it and buy another boat. Big black splat, big black splat, big black splat.......
