Types of material for inside covers?

Post by Pete »

I have seen only a few threads about the use of different types of materials on cushions. After spending time at the local fabric store, I see three possible choices:

1. Interior grade sunbrella
2. Exterior grade sunbrella
3. Heavy Upholstery (like used on sofas)

I would like to hear from folks who have recovered and to know what fabrics you choose (also, did you replace your foam?)

Thanks,

Pete

sunbrella all the way

Post by Sandy D. »

Pete,
Sunbrella is the way to go.Interior will offer you far more choices of color and patterns. It is also quite a bit softer, both are designed to be mildew resistant. My girlfriend recovers boat cushions all the time,as well as outdoor patio furniture, and she swears buy the stuff. If you haven't seen it already check out canvasdealer.com,I'm pretty sure they carry all the flavors. They have all kinds of cool stuff on that site like zippers, vinal windows, snaps and repair kits!
Good luck pete.

Sailrite.com is a great resourse for fabrics and information. They have detailed directions that you can down load for free as well. We are recovering our interior cushions with subrella.

Sailrite

I would agree that Sailrite is a great source of information. However, I would not order the fabric from them. I just ordered 15 yards of sunbrella and if I recall sailrite wanted either 17.50 or 18.50 a yard. I found two places by Googling "Sunbrella" and that only charged me 12.50 a yard for the same stuff. Now I think they have raised their price to 13.50, AND I got the 12.50 price because I had talked to them the week before they raised their price. and because I ordered over 10 yards.

Sunbrella bottoms and replace foam

Post by Roy J. »

When we redid the cushions on Auburn we replaced the foam with the best we could afford and an inch thicker than the original. It was totally worthwhile, since we like to sleep on the boat as often as possible. If you don't plan to ever sleep on it, then don't waste the money. For esthetic and marital bliss reasons we bought some very beautiful (and intensely expensive) sofa upholstery fabric for the cusion tops, and used sunbrella exterior for the invisible sides and bottoms. We therefore got mildew resistance and breathability on the potentially dampest surfaces and really nice fabric on top that my wife loves that also isn't the flowery pattern exterior sunbrella.

someone on another board highly recommended these folks....

here's what he had to say:

Fabric for cushions: I'd like to pass along an incredible company with my heartiest recommendations as a terrific outfit to do business with, and to save yourself a fortune. Samuel Harris, Ltd, 182 Front St. E., Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5A 1E6, phone 416.362.1964. This outfit does NOT reupholster cushions. They are a reseller of upholstery fabric at impossibly inexpensive prices. They purchase surplus and discontinued fabric from automobile manufacturers and marine manufacturers. Our cushions are now covered in a tan velour originally from General Motors. The fabric, INCLUDING shipping, cost us less than $7.00 a yard. You phone the firm, tell them the color range(s) and fabric types you're interested in, and they send you dozens of samples to choose from. Outstanding.

Here's his web page: http://www.capital.net/~skipper/sailinghome.html

At the time he re-upholstered, he owned a CS 30.
