Time to start thinking about the coming sailing season...

Post by Cathy Monaghan »

I know it's kinda early to be thinking about the coming sailing season, especially for those of us that are looking out our windows at snow-covered landscapes, but hopefully this will help to kickstart your thinking and planning for this summer's cruising.

The Northeast Fleet of the CDSOA will hold their annual 4th of July Float-in in Oyster Bay, NY. We plan on meeting in The Cove, located southeast of the harbor and southwest of Cove Neck, in the afternoon on the 4th.

Get there as early as you can to guarantee that you'll be able to anchor close to the other Cape Dorys in attendance. We'll spend the afternoon boat-hopping, so don't forget to bring your dinghy. If you don't have one, don't worry, one of us will come and get you. Then we'll have snacks and cocktails aboard one of the boats then we'll hop aboard another boat, probably mine, for a group potluck dinner.

After dinner will return to our boats to watch the fireworks which should start some time after 8:00 p.m.

In the morning on the 5th we'll get together one last time for a potluck breakfast before everyone departs.

So mark your calendars and plan on being in Oyster Bay on July 4th. Visit the CDSOA's "Events" page, Northeast Fleet section, for additional information or just click on the link below.

4th of July

Mad Hatter and crew will be in Long Island Sound area during the 4th and Oyster Harbor might be a good fit for our return trip to the Chesapeake. We'll keep tabs on the progress of the "float in" and just might attend.

For anyone who has not been to the Oyster Bay 4th of July float in, let me just say that the fireworks display is second to none!! Its absolutely fabulous!! Oyster Bay is a great harbor. Plenty of places there to overnight on the hook.
If anyone has any questions about Oyster Bay, for the 4th or any other time.....Oyster Bay is my home port. Just lemme know if you have any questions or need anything.
David...I hope you make it. I'd like to say hello!!

I hope you make it. It's always nice to meet the faces behind these postings.

When we leave Oyster Bay on the 5th we're heading for City Island and will probably get a mooring from one of the yacht clubs for the night. On the 6th we'll transit the East River. If we leave City Island round 8:30 a.m. on the 6th we should arrive at Hell Gate right around slack tide then will have the ebb with us all the way out of the harbor. Since you're heading our way, and if our schedules agree, we can transit the East River together. We can even escort you to Sandy Hook or Atlantic Highlands if you'd like.
