Need Jib Furling information

Post by wbennett@ymail.yu.edu »

I am looking to purchase a jib furling system for my CD30b cutter rig. I
wish to replace my main jib hank on. Could you please send me information
regarding pluses and minuses about which furling systems and which ones
work best for my boat. I will be doing some coastal curising.

Thankyou for help

The best out there is Harken, but it's also the most expensive.
Really good alternatives are Schaeffer, and Profurl. Catalina uses Schaeffer, they go together fast and easy and require no headstay modification as does the Harken. THe turnbuckel is kept internal on the drum and can still be adjusted. THe sections are popriveted together and in all is a very sturdy unit, that is well bearinged.

The Profurl used by Beneteau, will also go over the existing headstay, is easy to assemble and keeps the existing turnbuckle. The sections are held together with set screws. I have had some problems with them backing out and the foils seperating, generous portions of locktite should be used. Final assembly of the profurl is a little confusing until you have done it.

I am not impressed with the CDI, Furlex (Hunter uses this one), or the Facnor. All of which are difficult to assemble, erquire headstay modification and in the end seem to be held together by the shear grace of God.

Wally,

Is it ok if I delete your post on the same topic which appears in the sandbox?

Wally-

I can't comment on the installation aspects as I had a rigger install the furlers I have used....thought I should get it right, and didn't have the confidence to do it myself! I had installed on previous Quickstep 24 and Cape Dory 27 Harken furlers, and now have two Harkens on my Shannon. Have never had a single problem with any of them, so I can strongly recommend.

Wally:

Take a look at the Spin-Tec furler. Simple to install and well built. Good price as well. We liked ours enought to get a second one for the stay sail.

Rigging Only is running sales on both Schaefer and Harken. Schaefer sale ends tomorrow! You probably will not be able to beat their sale prices.

Sure... I think that you can go to your post in the sandbox and select the delete option.

If that doesn't work, let me know and I'll delete it.

I did not install the Harken Model 0 on my CD27, but did replace a foil section (bent by the movers or yard. Harken customer support is great. Aside from the one mishap on the hard, this unit (now 15 years old) has been totally trouble-free.

I can also highly recommend The Rigging loft and their web/catalog outlet, Rigging Only. Tom Bigsby is the best around.
