replace halyards on CD25

Post by Bill »

I would like to replace the orignal wire/rope halyards on my '77 CD25 with all-rope Yale ULS 3/8" line. Can anyone tell me if I can do this without modifying the halyard sheaves on the mast top? Will the rope line fix on the existing sheaves (the sheaves now handle 1/8" wire)? I would like to do this without dropping the mask or going aloft. Optinions on all-rope vs wire/rope halyards would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Bill:

I just replaced the halyards on Remedy, our CD27. The masthead sheaves appeared to have a secondary groove in the center, which may be intended to accept wire. I have no idea if the CD25 had the same sheaves, but Rig-Rite can tell you (or you can check their website).

The old halyards were all-rope, and worked fine with the original sheaves. I used 3/8 Sta-set X for the replacements, which was a challenge to splice, and I haven't stepped the mast yet, so I have no idea how it performs.

I replaced the Halyards on Sostenuto (my 1977 CD 25) with low strech systhetic line. It worked fine. No modifications were required.
