Update and pics

Post by fenixrises »

Hi all,

The interior demo is just about complete. I had to cut the icebox liner in half to remove it from the boat.
Here's a pic of the v-berth with the liner cut out where I will install a small bulkhead to form a new chain locker.

I also found a couple of cracks. One is in the bond that attaches the forward fuel tank structure to the hull. This is not a problem as I will be relocating the tank. But perhaps other 28 owners might give thier boats a gander.

The other may just be superficial. There is a piece of cloth laid over the filler used to bond the liner to the hull inside the galley cabinet. This piece of cloth has a crack in it as well. Both of these cracks are in the same general area. I do not know specifically what caused the fiberglass to crack. The is no damage to the hull in the area.

There are more pics on my site that show the salon sans furniture. It is amazing how big the interior now looks and how easy it is to get at the engine. ;)

Take care,
Fred B.

FenixRises-28 footer??

Sparrowhawk is a 1977 CD 28, but I have a vee birth and a chainlocker in the foremost bow access, under the bowsprit backing.

Your pictures look as if there is no provision for a forward berth. Am I missing something? I have only entered one other CD 28 and it was like Sparrowhawk.

Type of boat

Post by fenixrises »

Hi William,

My boat is a 1978 CD 28 sail #181. It was just like the CD 28's of its era. I am doing a major renovation on the boat in order to prepare it for long distance cruising, so there will be many changes from the original. I the picture it shows the v-berth furniture removed. As I rebuild the interior I will replace the v-berth with a somewhat modified version.

Have a look around. It might pay to bookmark the site as I add to it every couple of days.

Fiberglass Cracks

Post by George Shaunfield »

Fred,

Could the cracks in the fiberglass have been caused by inappropriately placed jackstands supporting too much weight of the hull when the boat was on the hard?

Just a thought.

Cracks

Post by johnny of STORK »

Nice work, Fred. Has Fenixrises been trailered much? STORK has a few cracks in similar superficial-seeming places, and I suspect it is from trailering what is basically a stiff boat fairly extensively, forcing some flexing of the bulkhead-hull connections. My .02.

Thanks for the response. I visited your website and have bookmarked it. I will eventually make a few improvements to Sparrowhawk, but will be ecstatic just to get her in the water this year. I bought her last year and made minor cosmetic repairs during the summer. I was short on funds for the launch and slip fees. Too much unemployment in the household. Better summer coming this year.

I have a RVG wind vane that needs some minor work. What do you currently have?

Windvane question

Post by fenixrises »

Hi William,

I do not yet have a windvane.
It is on my project list.
I made an auxiliary rudder/verticle axis vane for my last boat.
It worked very well and cost only a couple 100$s to make.
When I get to that particular project it will be documented with pics.

Happy Sails,
Fred B.
