I would like to install an autopilot this season on my CD 28. The question is, which one, Navico or Raytheon(autohelm)? Are they about equal or is one better for CD's. Also, installation, any problems to watch out for? Thanks

Re: Autopilots
I have bought and will install an Autohelm 2000 on my boat in the spring. I had an old Autohelm 2000 which broke and they don't make parts for it anymore. Any decent autopilot will work as long as you trim your sails right and if you don't expect it to work like a windvane. I use mine mostly for motoring and never when running downwind. Good luck

Re: Autopilots
Warren,
I have an Autohelm 2000+. I'm hard at work in the office, but I think the designation is correct. It is a wonderful unit, intrafaces with my GPS. I can't say enough good things about it or Raytheon.
Sincerely,
Lee

Re: Autopilots
I have a 17 year-old Autohelm 1000 on a CD28 and it works just great! Its rating would not let you think that the 10,000 pound CD28 would let it live, but I have "0" problems other than the original silk-screening wearing off.
I would replace it with a 2000+ now for the GPS interface and higher rating. The "lock-to-lock" speed is adequate with the old or 1000+
models because in those situations, you pop it off the tiller and turn the tiller by hand!
