So few CD26's

Post by Dennis Truett »

Is there any reason why there are so few CD26's? I'm considering one and can't find much info on them. I have the generic owners manual that covers the CD 22 to 28. It doesn't mention a 26. Also there were only 78 made and of thoes only 10 can be found in our registry. Where would one look for specs on 26. (I suspect it was the same as the 25) Was there something dislikable about the 26 that few people ordered them?

I don't know why so few were made--BUT, I feel lucky to have one of the 78. I'm not a big fan of diesels, and the 26 was largest Cape Dory made with an outboard. It actually has more in common with the 25D than with the 25, although the interior is very different from the 25D.

If you live in the Maryland area, I would be glad to show you mine any time.

I own a 1985 CD26 and you're right, for some reason the 26 is left out of many Cape Dory information sources. I can't explain why that is. The 26 is a great boat - it's economical to own and operate and is all Cape Dory at the same time - very well built and beautiful to look at. There is more information on the 26 elsewhere on this web site. Look for specifications for Cape Dories. By the way, there was a 26D, even more rare than the 26, recently posted for sale on this bulletin board (for an unbelievably low price). Search for "26D" and you'll find it. Good luck finding one.

Dennis,

If you would like a copy of the orginal CD26 sales brochure, drop me a line and I can ethier e-mail a copy or send a copy by mail. Besides what I show on my web page below, it has the listing of the optional equipment choices, sail plan, etc. For the CD26 and the Ty Senior, the advertisement money was low budget, only a black and white brochure.

Hi Dana...

I wonder if you can tell if there is much of a difference in sailing characteristics between a CD-25d and Cd-26 w/ outboard ??

I've found one of each, at a good price, but they're quite a distance from Atlanta, in different directions, naturally <GG>.

I was fortunate to have sailed both when I was first looking for a boat this size in 85. I did not even know of the existance of the 26 at the time I sailed the 25D. The CD25D handles almost identical to the CD26. Both like to sail to windward. As far as speed, outboard vs. the diesel....I did not notice a difference. It will not be a difference of sailing characteristics which separate the boats. It will be in basic interior layout and storage space, especially in the sail locker and under the companion way steps.

Hi Dana..

Thanks for the info...to pick your memory a bit more, I guess the CD25D would have the greater storage, as the interior layout is different. Your website pix of the CD25d and CD26 seem to show more teak in the CD26...I thought it was made to a somewhat different interior finish standard.

Harvey:
Dana probably knows more about this since he owns one, but I recall that when the Ty Sr. and 26 came out they were both attempts to use existing molds for less expensive boats. Therefore, the level of finish that was standard on the 25D was optional on the 26. I've looked at 26s that did not have opening ports, ash ceiling, etc. I've also seen those completely finished and with diesel engines; made an offer on one in Robinhood, but too late. Storage would likely go to the 26; if it has outboard that leaves a large area where the inboard would go. On the other hand the 26D had a lazarette similar to the 27.
All great boats, though.

Hi Dana, Now that I'll be owning a 26, it would be nice to have the sales brochure. It is obvious that almost everything was optional. This boat has only two of the six ports opening. It as ash on the ceilings in the cabin, but none in the V berth area. Still a great boat. It sure is nice to be able to stand up in it.(Vs my CD22)What ever would be easier for the brochure....
