Any Cape Dory circumnavs?
I was just wondering what the practical cruising range of the Cape Dory's is. Anybody know of Cape Dory's going around the globe? Or any other big cruises done on them?

Cruising range is limited only by the supply of food and water. The boats are certainly capable of blue water sailing.

Ryan: Right now, the CD-33 "Galileo" sailed by Derek Hillen out of Stamford, Conn. is on an extended voyage. She came down on the outside (not on the ICW) to Miami, continued to Key West, where he stayed for a week, sailed down to Cuba, from there to Mexico, Mexico to Belize in Honduras , where he is as we speak. The crossing from Mexico to Honduras was so far his worst part of the voyage. Apparently he got into very rough weather. He is also singlehanding Galileo, which I met when he passed through Miami. So Cape Dorys do take longer trips than just short cruises. Galileo has a Monitor windvane, Furuno radar and weather instruments (this last one awsome) the 4000 Autohelm autopilot, a wind generator and big solar panels mounted on the port side of the cockpit. She has all her lines rigged for singlehanding and when I saw her, she was loaded with food and water. Derek is planning to go thru the Panama Canal to Australia!!!

Ryan, the previous owner of Eendracht, CD 36, took her across the Atlantic, cruised Europe for several summers, and brought her back three years ago.Ryan Turner wrote: I was just wondering what the practical cruising range of the Cape Dory's is. If any of you have any doubts about the seaworthiness of your Cape Dorys, get your hands on the February 1998 issue of Cruising World.
The article "Dumb Bloody Luck" by James Blomsness begins on page 97 and describes the author's delivery adventure aboard ABOVE RUBIES, his newly purchased Cape Dory 36, from San Diego, California to Port
Lions, Alaska in early March Pacific gales.
The article was published some tome after his adventure. He has subsequently sailed her to Hawaii and the South Pacific.

The CD30 " Dayspring " , hull 107 ( 1979 ) is in Nelson, New Zealand,
having sailed here from, we believe, California, where she was set
up for an extended voyage. Her owner spoke highly of her sea keeping
during the voyage. We, the new owners, think she is capable of going
far and wide.

RYAN, IN 1987 ITOOK MY CD31 KEEMA FROM LAKE ST. CLAIR, MICHIGAN OUT THE ST. LAWRENCE DOWN THW COAST OF NOVA SCOTIA AND CONTIUED SOUTH THROUGH THE BAHAMAS AND TO PANAMA. FROM PANAMA I SINGLEHANDED HER TO TAHITI VIA EASTER ISLAND, PITCAIRN ISLAND AND THE GAMBIERS. EVENTUALLY I ENDED UP IN FIJI A LITTLE OVER HALFWAY ON MY INTENDED CIRCUMNAVIGATION. UNFORTUNATELY I MADE AN UNSCHEDULED STOP ON SUVA REEF. A LACK OF FUNDS TO UNDO THE DAMAGE THAT THE SALVAGE TEAM DID BROUGHT MY TRIP TO AN END. hOWEVER I HAVE NO DOUBTS ABOUT THE CAPABILITIES OF CAPE DORY BOATS. I NOW HAVE A CD33 AND AM WORKING TOWARDS OUR NRXT ADVENTURE.Ryan Turner wrote: I was just wondering what the practical cruising range of the Cape Dory's is. The Cape Dory 36 "Courier" made a 5 year circumavigation.
During the trip I believe the couple that sailed her had a
baby. Upon their return they appeared at at least one boat
show for the Cape Dory company. The captain also published
a story or two in the sailing press about the adventure.
My wife and I have sailed our 36 from Maine to Antigua and
feel very comfortable offshore in our boat. In Bermuda
several years ago we met a flock of Cape Dorys including two
36s, a 330, and a 27. In addition an owner of the
motorsailer was crewing on another boat.
If you are up to sailing a long cruise or a
circumnavigation, the boat will be, if you have prepared
correctly.
Best of luck in your adventures.

Re: Any Cape Dory circumnavs?
My CD30 has been from Galveston to the Dry Tortugas non-stop, around Florida, down the Bahamas, across to Dominica, the Caymans, Yucatan, and back to Galveston, TX, on a one year trip. Unfortunately, the previous owner did it, not me, but I am hoping to get my chance.Ryan Turner wrote: I was just wondering what the practical cruising range of the Cape Dory's is.
