What a great sailing movie......and a tear jerker chick flick in one. I was not prepared for the quality of this movie. Even Costner couldn't ruin this film. The story features a 40 foot Alden Schooner. Lets not forgot who Aldens chief draftsmen was.....Carl Alberg. The Schooner may have preceded Alden's tenure though. Great cure for cabin fever.

Re: Message in a Bottle-the movie
The book placed this story at Wrightsville Beach, NC, where I live. The movie placed the story on the North Carolina Outer Banks. So no one will be confused about all the rocks that they saw in the movie, the movie was filmed in Maine, not North Carolina. We have sand and mud.
Where ever the boats were located, however, they were beautiful.

The sailboat is "Malabar II," a 1922 Alden schooner whose home port is Vineyard Haven. The boat is owned by Ginny and Jim Lobdell and is a gem.
"Message in a Bottle" was filmed primarily in Phippsburg, Maine, though some shots were made in Portland. "Malabar II" was trucked to the West Coast for some wrap up shots before returning to Vineyard Haven.

Re: Message in a Bottle-the movie
The sailing footage was great...not enough of it. Too bad Kevin Costner didn't wear a life jacket and take a flotation device with him for his final rescue attempt...perhaps he could have lived to enjoy that magnificent boat...(even though he seemed to have built her in about four weeks).
Malabar II........ahhhhhh
I whispered to my wife that the boat looked like one of the Malabars. Of course she looked at me clueless and told me to be quiet.........You could see that that boat is still fast.........ahhhh

Theresa first inquired about, before meeting Garrett ? I believe it was a Cape Dory 36-slightly newer than our 1980 CD 36 "Sea Waif"
