Can anyone recommend a sailmaker to make new sails. The web is filled with so many; how do you choose a good sailmaker? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Michael

Hild Sails in City Island, NY made my 1990 150% roller reefer. It is still in good shape. He should have measurements on file. Maybe a bit pricey, might want to check around. Good luck.

Check out the February 1, 1999 issue of Practical Sailor. Good information that basically says for cruising stick with dacron, take your own measurents, and price shop the mail order firms. After all most of the sail lofts today are really sales offices that take your order and have it manufactured elsewhere.

Re: Good sailmaker for CD 25D
I shopped the internet to a fair thee well and ended up at Quantum's New Jersey loft. They build sails in Annapolis, and a less expensive version (Quest)in South Africa. A friend of mine uses their S.A. sails and sez they're terrific. Their schedule was such last Fall that they built mine in Annapolis for the S.A. price. The big difference between that loft and any of the others was that they came to the boat and measured it completely and we spent a lot of time discussing the kind of sailing we do, and the rep will come up to Connecticut for the maiden voyage of the sails. For that level of service I think I spent $200-300 more than the middle bidders from the net. I had planned on replacing the Genoa only but bought a new main as well 'cause I was so impressed with the rep's knowledge. The sails are the main engine of your boat. Go for the best.

Where are you located? I'm a believer in buying sails locally... you'll eventually need repairs and cleaning... plus my sailmaker is my best source of other repair/maint resources.

Re: Good sailmaker for CD 25D
Micheal, I had a new main and staysail built by Sutter Sailmakers in Sausalito for my Cape Dory 330. Mike at the loft spent many hours going over every detail with me and in the end we built the ultimate SF Bay sails.
If I had to do it again I would definitely go back to Sutter Sailmakers 415-332-2510 and would recommend them to anyone. If you talk to Mike, please tell him you heard of him through me.
Best Regards
