Boat THEFT , web site info ?

Post by John »

This message has nothing to do with our CD30 thankfully. It does have to do with a another boat that has been stolen. Hard to believe but theft happens to the big ones also. We would like to know if anyone knows of a web site that posts information on stolen boats to help find them.
We sold a guy a 37 foot Island Trader ketch and just before the balloon payment was due he and the boat have disappeared. We have information that the boat was moved by transport truck to the Port Angeles / Seattle Washington area. If anyone is familiar with that area please contact me if you can help with info about boatyards, marinas or any place that may be able to handle a 20,000lb, 37 foot, full keel ketch. Below is a description of the boat.

THANKS FOR ANY AND ALL HELP !!!

John - She sounds like a beautiful boat. Boats of this nature tend to attract the eye of classic boat enthusiasts. Have you contacted Wooden Boat, or Good Old Boat magazines? Boat theft is something that most owners fear and all have no tolerance for.

I wish you the best of luck.

Sorry to hear about the loss. Have you notified law enforcement authorities, both at your end and at the suspected destination? A boat like that is hard to hide. Have you considered a private eye to find the boat before it gets sailed abroad? (depending on how much is left on the balloon, it might be worth the cost)

More importantly, try to sue the guy (assuming he and all assets haven't completely vanished.) You will need to get a lawyer to help find any assets and try to attach such assets to satisfy your claim. If he is technically in lawful possession of the boat, but just owes money on the sale, the police may not be interested if it does not qualify as a theft (need more info about terms of contract of sale and possession). Although attaching the boat itself is the best option, any other assets could be attached.

Chris, thank you for the magazine ideas. You are absolutely correct in your statments about fear and no tolerance. I can't stress enough to all owners on the CD web site that you take every measure you possibly can to protect your vessels. When you sell a boat and you think all the i's are dotted and the t's are crossed,..... take awhile and ponder exactly what you are about to do, pause long, think hard, evaluate ever so carefully, double and triple check everything you possibly can and then feel secure you have made all the right decisions and rejoice that you have sold your boat. Then, at a later date, to your total astonishment, disbelief and absolute horror you come to the realization things have gone completely awry. You thought your contract totally protected you, you and your ($150/hr) friend figured all the bases were covered to the infinate letter of the law. Maybe they were to an honorable person, the problem is the thieves could care less. So where do you get help when things go wrong. Forget the authorities, take it from someone who knows first hand what kind of response you'll get when someone wanders off with your boat. They shrug their shoulders and say "we can't do anything, it's the law" go see a lawyer. Meanwhile, 3000 miles away someone is sailing off to the South Pacific in YOUR BOAT!! Laughing all the way to the islands. And as for the loser, well naturally, we're on our way back to see our $150/hr friend for some LEGAL ADVICE, of course. By the way, for all of you out there that think it was wise to document your boat with the Coast Guard because you felt it was better protected from theft, you can FORGET IT !!!! They can't be bothered in any way, shape or form. To quote them "we only deal with search and rescue matters"........go figure! I wonder if they would have the same position if it were a congressman's yacht or the Presidential yacht? Any bets on how that would be handled? The Coast Guard wants more money, I want more help! Bottom line to all this: IF YOUR BOAT GETS STOLEN - YOU WILL BE ON YOUR OWN TO RECOVER IT, "BEWARE,BEWARE,BEWARE"

for unknown (to me) reasons my suggestion of yesterday didn't make it to the board. The Hams (radio Amateurs) have many maratime nets. You might try to locate one where you think the boat and ask them to relay your notice. Good luck.

John - Do you have any pictures of the boat which you could post on the internet? I have a couple of friends (two local cops) with friends in the Seattle area who can keep an eye out for her. If you post them on the net then their friends could access them directly.

I think the most likely way to find the boat is to find out who transported it.There are thousands of marinas and boatyards but very few boat transport companies! There is a paper trail behind the boat just figure out how to pick it up before it gets stale. Ask all the marinas in the area about boat transports. This might take a few days but it will help you find out who the most likely transporter is.Once you know for sure who the trucking co is go after them to produce their contract with the thief.Trucks that can move something that big are rigged just for that purpose. If it was a wide load they had to get special permits for that too. This is your trail it will help to proove intent at a later time. Trying to find it any other way will be too hit and miss ....get on the trail and find it that way.How long ago did this happen? The boat is probably changed a bit by now but there will always be ways to find it if you keep tryin.

There are a couple of websites that post information regarding stolen boats:

Special Ops is located in Florida and offers recovery services (don't know what it would cost).

Fox Investigative Agency also in Florida offers recovery services but also offers a FREE service to post info regarding lost or stolen vessels on their website.

The Stolen Boats and Gear Site in Washington provides listings of both lost and found boats and boating gear. You can make a post here for free as well.

Maybe this info will help.

I'm having some slides digitized that I will be able to furnish via e-mail soon I hope. In the interim I have a very good illustration that I can e-mail to anyone interested, just E-me and I'll send one off. Thanks a lot for your concern.

Thats good advice Steve. We've been looking into that for quite sometime. You would be surprised how many transport companies service Florida, the list is long, very long. That doesn't even account for the small operations that few people know about. We only discovered one company out of many that even had a record of quoting the job. They didn't move it however. We are checking with the Florida Department of Transportation on whether any wide load permits were pulled to transport a load similar to that boat. You are correct that there should be a paper trail of permits, weigh station documents.

Sam,
Where would one get info on Ham organizations such as those you mention? The web? What search criteria would you use?
