Just purchased CD25, hull 787, and the outboard that came with the boat had to be put in the shop for overhaul. Have a friend from whom I can borrow a 3.5 HP ob for temporary use. Does anybody know if that size motor will come anywhere close to being enough power to power the boat. We sail on an inland lake with max winds to 25 mph,,,normal winds 10-15 mph. Thanks.

Outboard for CD25

Re: Outboard for CD25
I just got an 8hp Tohatsu that seems to work fine, even in a moderate tidal rip.Jim Shivers wrote: Just purchased CD25, hull 787, and the outboard that came with the boat had to be put in the shop for overhaul. The 3.5 HP might get you away from or into the dock. But for the winds you indicated, I don't think you have a chance if the wind picks up in more open water or unsheltered area.Jim Shivers wrote: Just purchased CD25, hull 787, and the outboard that came with the boat had to be put in the shop for overhaul. If someone has a 6HP or greater that you could borrow, it would be much better.

Re: Outboard for CD25
I'll make my usual pitch for a 6hp engine. We replaced the 9.9 on our former boat (a CD 25), and were delighted with the smaller, simpler, lighter engine.

Where do you sail and how often and for what reason did you use it...David B. Brownlee wrote: I'll make my usual pitch for a 6hp engine. We replaced the 9.9 on our former boat (a CD 25), and were delighted with the smaller, simpler, lighter engine.

Re: Outboard for CD25
We sailed our CD25 down from LI Sound to the Delaware River, where we kept her near Burlington, above Philadelphia, for two years, before moving her down to the Chesapeake. We took (and take) 7-20 day cruises. We bought the new engine after moving to the Chesapeake. The engine was used to exit and enter harbors, inlets, and the like and to power us through calms. It seemed to have as much power as our old and weary 9.9, and it would push us to windward in 25+ knots--but we didn't do much of that. I suppose that I should add that we're also satisfied with the little Yanmar YSM-8 in our present CD27.
