3 Blade Prop on CD330??

3 Blade Prop on CD330??
Does anyone have first hand experience with a three blade prop on a CD330 (or CD33)? The advertising literature calls for a three blade unit, but we seem to have "loss" a blade. RESPITE has the Universal M30 diesel.
Any info would be well received.

Re: 3 Blade Prop on CD330??
I have a CD330 with a 3 blade prop. I do not know if it is the original blade but it is a three blade 10 RH 12 bronze propeller on a 1" stainless shaft. She gets a good bite in forward and experiences the typical problems of a full keel boat in reverse. Once she gets moving the rudder control is restored. I have not operated with a two blade so I can not offer as comparison.M. R. Bober wrote: Does anyone have first hand experience with a three blade prop on a CD330 (or CD33)? Re: 3 Blade Prop on CD330??
I have experience with 3 blade prop, though on a 25D. I assume the following information will be of use, and certainly worth a look. I have been trying to resolve a black sooty exhaust problem -- is it the fact that the exhaust outlet is frequently submerged, or something else. When replacing a stripped fill plug in the transmission ( a whole other adventure!) I found a crack in the water injection elbow and the elbow filled with carbon. At the same time I had contacted West by North Enterprises <www.westbynorth.com> about a new prop. These folks sell the Campbell Sailer a prop specifically for sailboats, low drag et.al. In the description of the boat I included current prop size (12 RH 11) if my memory is correct. Turns out this is way too much prop. Note: The previous owner said he wanted to be able to back down. West by North recommends a 12 RH 7, and stated the soot was a result of the engine being way over loaded due to the incorrect prop. Saved me a lot of work, and the engine will be much happier. Give the web site a look, and fill out their quote form, they will get right back to you and should be able to assist you quite nicely.M. R. the 3 blade prop is hard on the prop shaft. i have heard of them breaking, usually during a cruise.

Re: 3 Blade Prop on CD330??
Hi, there: I also have a CD-33 (1981) with a Universal Atomic diesel AND a 3-blade prop. The boat has had that same prop now for over four years, and a similar 3-blade when it was first purchased. I am the third owner, but as far as I know, she has always had a 3-blade prop. Just today I hauled out for repainting the bottom, and thought to myself that it would be nice to have a slightly larger 3-blade prop, since there is room to spare in the space. My prop has a nice pitch to it (you re-pitch to have more speed, but only if the engine allows for that). I'll be talking to my mechanic in two days to see if he recommends going to a larger prop, or if he thinks this one is still OK. I have motored extensively and the prop has never given me a problem yet (nor the engine). My prop turns freely when under sail, and I do not find it to be a terrible drag on boat speed.
