Cleaning the fiberglass
Last Friday my baby came out of the water (I started therapy yesterday and hope to make it through the entire winter without jumping off a bridge) and when I was cleaning the hull I tried to remove the light tan colored stain above the bootstripe running from bow to stern. I was unsuccessful during the summer removing this and would like some advice as to what will work to remove this stain. I've been told that vinegar does a good job cleaning various stains. Any help would be appreciated.

Those nasty stains..........
The place where I previously drydocked my boat had a well respected owner who did all the hauling himself.....wearing a suit jacket and a tie. When the boat came out he would scrup the entire hull with clorox and water with a brush. He would then rinse and reapply. I was watching this and asked why he didn't rinse again. He said,"Son, because ya let it sit all winter....." I'm sure there are more advanced methods and products but this is tried and true. Also I sail in this brackish cedar colored water that stains the hull quite a bit.

Re: Cleaning the fiberglass
My 25D is on a muddy inland lake and has the same stains just above the water line. I have tried elbow grease, and othersrub cleaners to no avail. If you find something that works, please let me know.

Re: Cleaning the fiberglass
On & Off works on virtually everything, including waterline stains. The biggest problem I have after cleaning the waterline is that the rest of the hull looks dirty and I need to do the whole boat. On & Off is not cheap as cleaners go, and it is an acid, so be careful. Soft Scrub with Bleach also works quite well, but is more abrasive.

Re: Cleaning the fiberglass
We use a product called "Y-10" -- available in the Northeast, at least. It works beautifully on all the waterline stuff we get in the saltwater. I think it's an oxalic acid gel.

Re: Cleaning the fiberglass
Over the last 35 years I have tried just about all of the various hull stain removers and have determined that Y10 is far and away the best. It is also very easy to use since it is a homogeneous gel which adheres to the vertical sections of the hull. It requires no rubbing or scrubbing. Simply wipe it on, wait for it to do its bleaching job and rinse it off. It also does an excellent job of removing rust stains left by exhaust water running down the hull.

Re: Cleaning the fiberglass
On/Off's the way to go. Full strength it'll take a barnacle right off the hull. Half strength it will take any brown stain off the side of your boat. No scrubbing. Quick and easy. It's like painting your hull white again.

Re: Cleaning the fiberglass
Gary,
A local boatyard here on Cape Cod turned me on to the best and easiest way to clean up the waterline stains...industrial strength toilet bowl cleaner. Don't laugh it works and its cheap, $4.00 a quart and I do my entire hull with a cupful. Just apply it with a LONG handled deck brush, wait 5 minutes and hose it off. Be very careful this stuff is very strong, 22-25% hydrogen chloride (sp?).Wear rubber gloves and glasses. Its easy to splash it on yourself when your brushing it on.
Good luck and be careful.

Another vote for Y-10. It has been a life and sore muscle saver for me for a few years now. What a relief.

Re: Cleaning the fiberglass
All you guys are on the right track with chemical cleaners, However , there is a product we use a lot here in the south to get rid of the intercostal mustache. i've used it for 10 years with no bad effects to gel coat or Allgrip. It's called SnoBol. Its a toilet bowl cleaner sold in any supermarket for about a buck a bottle . one bottle will do several boats. Use it full strength on the waterline, or squirt some on a wet sponge to do the whole boat. Its an acid based product, probably in the same family as Y10, but at a fraction of the cost. Get the clear version, not the blue. It will dewax the hull, and also get rust stains off.Gary McDonough wrote: Last Friday my baby came out of the water (I started therapy yesterday and hope to make it through the entire winter without jumping off a bridge) and when I was cleaning the hull I tried to remove the light tan colored stain above the bootstripe running from bow to stern. Re: Cleaning the fiberglass
There is a very nice product for small area work. FSR Fiberglass Stain Remover is marketed by Davis (the wind indicator people) and carried by West and others. Acid based, it is in jell form, so it doesn't splash and doesn't run. A little expensive, but it can be safely carried on the boat for use whenever necessary,

Re: Cleaning the fiberglass
I was often reminded as I walked away from my freshly covered boat at the end of the season of that famous poem that says "If winter comes, can spring be far behind?"
My response always was...HELL YES!
