I am considering the purchace of a CD 25D. I am looking for a proven sailboat at an affordable price for extended cruising. I am interested in hearing from other 25D owners who have cruised extensively in this boat, and their experiences. I am hoping to spend next Summer cruising from Washington DC to Mewfoundland and back and the 25D seems to be the right boat for this endeavour within my price range. Also in the future I would be contemplating an Atlantic crossing.

We have been sailing our 25D for only one season but I can tell you that it handles unlike the other boats of this size that we have sailed. The boys were out being boys this summer in 30+ knots with full main and jib size sail exposed on the roller furling genoa. Once, when we had the rail in the water along with 8" of stantion, the boat was solid as a rock. Instead of forcing itself to head upwind it just slowed to 3 knots and we felt like we could do this all day.
Practical Sailor had really good things to say about the 25D's capabilities in blue water; though sailing on a 25 foot boat across the ocean "wasn't their cup of tea".
A good boat that we could trailer to various (10,000) lakes was our first priority. One that felt safe was our second, and we being bathroom-centric, the commodious head sealed the deal.

Dear Sean, I own hull #2 of the CD25D's. I purchased the boat from the original owner in June of '97. I will tell you that for coastal cruising, in most any conditions, she is a terrific boat! In heavy air, the thing to remember is, "If the crew can handle it, the boat surely will."
I sail single handed quite often here on the Chesapeake. This past Spring, I took the boat on a one week cruise of the middle Bay. It was classic "Cape Dory weather" all week long. Sailing single handed, I tend to be bit more conservative with my sail selection. I reef early, and tend to favor a working jib over the genoa, with winds over 16knots. I have the halyards lead aft to the cockpit, and with auto pilot, this makes single handed sailing a little easier for me.
I'd tend to want a MUCH LARGER boat for an Atlantic crossing. If you've never been off shore before, the waves and the wind are unlike anything you've ever seen before, especially crossing the Gulf Stream.
But for cruising, exploring, and gunk holeing, you'll appreciate the "feel" of this 25 footer.
There are at least three 25D's for sale in the November Soundings. Incidently, I try to keep track of as many of the 25D's as I can. It's just a hobby, and since there were only 189 of them built, and since I have perhaps the first one that was sold, the idea of finding as many of them as possible appeals to me.

I have owned a CD 25D for 9 years and enjoyed her very much. I (and my family) have done some moderately extensive cruising including crossing Lake Michigan and cruising the Michigan coast, cruising the Bahamas for 2 months, and cruising the the North Channel area of Lake Huron for 1 month. I've never had a serious problem with the boat or motor. In my opinion the boat sails well and inspires confidence even in some fairly nasty conditions. Good luck in your endeavors!

Like the others here, I suspect that the CD25D may be too small for
a comfortable atlantic crossing. Just thinking about it, A larger boat would have a longer waterline and therefore greater speed, as
well as more stowage.
One of the great things about the 25D is the confident way it handles heavy air. I've been sailing comfortably in winds that leave
Catalina 22's looking blown out and heading for harbor. In the
25D its just time to reef.
Why not try out your cruise, as planned, and, if the 25D is comfortable, try Bermuda? Let us know how it goes.

My wife Carol and I have been cruising on Loki for three summers now. We regularly take two weeks and cruise the Maine coast from East Boothbay to the Roque Island area. We have a glorious time be it clear and breezy or foggy and flat. The boat is a good fit for the two of us. We carry enough dry and canned food for the two weeks, but usually are lurred by stores such as the Pine Tree market in Northeast Harbor and the thought of fresh food. Water is storred in two tanks on the starboard side, one under the pilot berth and one under the settee (sp?, 'the seat').
I have moved the sail controls to the cockpit with the haylard winched mounted on the cabin top. This makes single handing a snap. The boat is comfortable under sail, and it sails best when kept upright.
Aux. power is provided by a Westerbeke 10-2, a 10 hp twin cyliner diesel with fresh water cooling. This provides more than enough hot water for our needs.
We are cruising to Nova Scotia in 2000, but I don't know about going 'cross the pond. Maybe some one has done it, it will be interesting to find out.
I hope this jumbled mess has been of some use, just our thoughts and ideas. The 25D is a wonderfull boat, and I am certain you will not be disapointed with your choice.

We have sailed our 25D since it was new in 1982. We have sailed the Sea of Cortez and crossed to the Baha twice. Rode out Huricane Raymond in Mexico in 1989. Sailed to the Bahamas, Maine to Nova Scotia, Chesapeake, Anacortes to Canada and Desolation sound. The water and the Fuel take a little planning on longer trips. Call if you want more details.

For example, sail inventory, changes/additions to tankage (fuel and water), storage space, crew size, self-stearing, storm tactics, etc. I presently cruise the east coast- NJ to NY and MD.
