rugs, settee and v-berth cushions
We are now the proud owners of a CD 27--after looking for several months, we bought #44 ("Sarah Wren") here in Maine. She's in quite good shape, but could use a few renovations, especially in the interior decoration department. Can anyone recommend an inexpensive source of cushions for the settees and v-berth? Also, unfortunately our 27 dates from before the switch to teak or holly cabin soles. Right now there are two rugs over the white fiberglass but they tend to wrinkle and twist and don't look very sharp. What do you all do to cover the cabin floor?

As I remember, there is not a lot of cabin sole area on the 27. Would you consider teak and holly sole over the fiberglass? Many of our boats is a thick teak and holly sole veener over hardwood.

P.S. Teak and holly sole ply is available in 1/4 and 3/4" thickness.

The cushions on our CD25 had been redone by the previous owners and looked a bit "tired".
Although my wife has successfully made several "sewn" items for the boat using Sailrite kits and has also completed many "from scratch" projects, the amateur look of the "redone" existing cushions indicated that this was probably a job for a professional.
We went to a auto upholstery shop that also did boat work (yellow pages). They had foam and covering material samples on hand. We chose a 4", firm foam and are happy with the results.
The total cost was about $350

Congratulations on your new boat!
I suppose a piece of carpet, cut to fit and with a non-skid backing, would work. a custom teak and holly sole would be a lot of work, but could be built up on a plywood base over the fiberglass.

We had new cushions made for Remedy, our CD27 (#37) at a local upholstery shop (in Boston) that was having a 20% off sale last spring; we chose a sunbrella-like fabric that has all the same properties, but is more attractive and cheaper than sunbrella. Using a conventional upholstery shop was about half the cost of a marine shop.Barbara wrote: Can anyone recommend an inexpensive source of cushions for the settees and v-berth?
There isn't much cabin sole, especially with the drop-leaf table in our boat; we don't do anything to the floor, and find that it is much easier to keep clean than having rugs.Barbara wrote: What do you all do to cover the cabin floor?

Re: rugs, settee and v-berth cushions
Have you considered using a steam cleaner on them? Obviously, if the fabric is very worn, or has holes, this won't help. I took my cushions home over the winter, rented a steam cleaner from the grocery store, and ran it along the cushions. Then, I removed the foam and placed milk crates inside the cushion covers to facilitate drying. You'd be amazed at how much dirt comes out and how nice the cushions look now.

Barbara - For my previous boat I made a trip to my local Home Depot and found several small oriental style area rugs which matched the color scheme of my interior. I then sewed a piece of heavy gauge Velcro to each corner of the rugs and used an adhesive to attach the other Velcro piece to the sole (no permanent damage). The rugs stay in place and can be easily removed for drying or cleaning. The cost for the 3 rugs and Velcro was under $50.Barbara wrote: We are now the proud owners of a CD 27--after looking for several months, we bought #44 ("Sarah Wren") here in Maine. Darin,
I agree whole heartedly with you! When I purchased Hanalei (CD-30) this spring, she hadn't been in the water for over two years. The cushions looked as if they hadn't been cleaned since 1984! We rented a Rug Doctor for 20 bucks from the local grocery store, and viola! The grey cushions are actually blue and a light grey!! There was an incredible amount of pizza sauce and whatever that came out of those cushions. We will probably clean them every year as we did at the start of this year, of course, I remove everything from Hanalei when she goes on the hard for winter. Then everything gets cleaned and sorted out.
