Repainting a Typhoon, spar hardware and sails

Post by cyrus jordan »

Level of the boot top:
I've just removed (Peelaway) the blue bottom paint and red boot stripe from my as yet unnamed '74 Typhoon weekender. It doesn't look like anyone has ever repainted anything on this hull. There is an inscribed line at the top of the boot top. No marking elswhere. Did Cape Dory put this inscription on the hull?

This summer I noticed that the boot top seemed to have been too low; lots of aquatic growth was present on the boot top and even above. My intention at this time is to put ant-fouling right up to the top of the old boot top and not reapply a boot top. The topsides are getting Awlgripped by someone else with black Awlgrip. Does anyone with more experience or smarts than me predict that there is something wrong with this plan?

water barrier/anti-foulant:
Suggestions for water barriers and anti-foulants to use? I'm tempted to use US Paint products, but a little leary of my capacity to follow all the directions and to be able to do it within the next month outside in Vermont.

spar hardware:
I need new braces (or whatever they're called) to attach the spreaders to the mast. Someone rigged the shrouds in reverse and bent the male part of the braces so that the spreaders now are no longer positioned athwartship. Where should I look?

I also want to get a new gooseneck for the mast. The spring in the original one that's still on the boat has gone, allowing the mast to roll when the sail's not up. I also want the new gooseneck to be able to accept two reefing hooks. Trying to jiffy reef the adjustable gooseneck to a mast mounted cleat is too difficult.. Where should I look for a new gooseneck? or am I talking a new boom?

Dura-sails:
Anyone have any experience with Doyle Durasails? How about other full battened sails?

gennachers:
Again, any experience and guideance about using a gennacher on a Typhoon?

thanks

Rig-Rite supplied me with a new goose-neck fitting with a reefing hook. It fit nicely on my old boom with some minor filing. They can be found in the "Where to Look" section of this website.

That line is incorporated into the mold of the hull as are all the points of hardware. That's "Carl's waterline."
