CD 25 - Advice on Buying

Post by John Broadwater »

I am considering buying a '78 CD 25 for river/Chesapeake Bay sailing. It seems to be in good condition. Does anyone have general advice on what questions I should ask the seller? Thanks!

John: Ask about any major repairs, the age of the sails and rigging, and any equipment to be included with the boat (I got a cover and frame, and a working jib that were just laying around in the seller's garage).

If you can find out who any of the prior owners were, try to contact them for a more objective appraisal of the boat.

Also, find out who services the boat, and check the service records for indications that regular maintenance has been kept up.

Then have the boat surveyed, buy it and enjoy.

John - I received a questionnaire from the surveyor I used, which was to be completed by the previous owner. Each of the questions was to be answered yes or no. Any affirmative responses required additional information as to extent of damage, type of repair, name of repair facility and date of repair. The questions were:

1. Has the vessel sustained any hull damage as a result of collision or grounding?
2. Has the vessel sustained any damage as a result of flooding or sinking?
3. Has the vessel sustained any damage as a result of fire?
4. Has the vessel been repaired as a result of a warranty claim or structural failure?
5. Has the vessel been repaired as a result of a lightning strike?
6. Has the vessel had major propelling engine or generator problems or rebuilds?
7. The engine hours are known to be __________ to the best of my knowledge.
8. Is the vessel subject to any liens? (If yes, please provide name and address of lien holder)

The document concludes with the following statement and request for owners signature:

The above information was disclosed to the prospective buyer by the seller (prior owner) of the vessel _________ and said information is acknowledged as having been disclosed and taken into account for the agreed price on the above described vessel, between seller and prospective buyer.

Have the boat surveyed... the surveyor will know what to ask and you'll sleep better.

In any case, ask about the ownership history... it's nice to know in any case how many previous owners and what they named her. Also, known damage/accidents/etc., and the maint history. Knowing who maintained the boat will give you a place to call if you have questions. Also ask if the owner has any other equipment or whatever that's not on the boat. Maybe not a big deal, but the seller I dealt with (retiring from boating) brought cans of varnish, cetol, wax, cleaning supplies, etc., that he had in his basement.
