Has anyone had experience installing a stove on the cabin shelf on the starboard side of the companionway? Our boat did not come equipped with a stove, we'd like to have one, and this is the only available place. However, our compass is mounted on the bulkhead starboard of the companioway on deck (the back of the compass is about 2' from the cabin shelf below) and I'm concerned about magnetic interference. Any recommendations?

We have modified our CD25 significantly for cruising. However the solution to the stove problem went unsolved until this week (We have been using a portable propane unit). At the Anapolis sailboat show we saw a new item Simpson Lawrence has just brought out. It is a combination 2 burner stove with a sink. The SL catalog says "designed for extra snug galleys". It all stainless, measures total 18" for and aft by 19" wide by 4 and 1/2 inches deep. (I put a tape on the display and the catalog is correct.) The stove is propane and has fiddles to clamp the pots in place. The SL cat. # is SM927. I ordered one at the show from Defender. I plan to modify the port shelf to the same depth as the starboard side, discard the old sink and drop in the new unit. (We had the shelves out during the rebuild and they are not hard to remove.)

We simply bought a Kenyon single burner Butane portable unit (tho they do have a flush mount unit too). It has a fiddle option for pots and a mounting kit. It snuggly fits on the starboard counter and slides out of way when not used ... plus we can put it out on the engine lazarette for more room very easily. $58 at West Marine plus butane cylinders ($5 lasted most of summer with light use).
