RE: email virus
About a week ago I received an email from "cstalker@...". I know Clay Stalker is a CD member here and so without thinking I opened the email and downloaded a document only to find that it contained a virus. I subsequently looked up Cd'er Clay Stalker's email address and it is; cstalker@cheshire.net. I don't recall the last part of the bad email address, but I would like to advise all CD members to be very cautious about opening any email that is not specifically from
'our' Clay Stalker.

Re: RE: email virus
I have become aware that my own email address has been used to send mail with viruses and have not figured out a way to stop it or find out where it comes from. I never send attachments so it isn't a case of someone adding the virus to my mail and the recipients are not anyone I know. If you find a cure please let me know.Paul Hierstein wrote: About a week ago I received an email from "cstalker@...". Thanks for the info...I am unaware of any problems with my e-mail, I have software that screens both incoming and outgoing mail....I send e-mails from both my home and here at Cheshire Medical Center. I sometimes get lots of "crap" here at work and just delete it...Hope you didn't get bit....

Klez Virus
This happened to me earlier this year. The Klez virus, and other similar viruses, have "spoofing" programs that take someone's address book and send new e-mails with virus attachments. Rather than simply sending the virus to everyone in the address book, it puts random "from" identities from the address book as well.
I started getting "returned undeliverable" e-mail that I had never sent. I updated my virus definitions and found that I did not have any viruses. Rather, SOMEONE ELSE had my address in their book and the virus "spoofed" me. Those e-mails to addresses that were no longer in effect got returned to me.
The short of it is that with these spoofing viruses, you likely did not actually receive it from the "from" address in the attacking e-mail.
Keep your anti-virus definitions current!

Keep virus definitions up-to-date
For information regarding computer viruses, including instructions for decontaminating your infected computer, visit the Symantec or McAffee web sites. More importantly, keep your computer's virus definitions up-to-date. New definitions are posted monthly. If you haven't been updating your definitions at least monthly, then you're really leaving your computer wide open to attack. Also, unless you're certain your internet provider is doing it for you, never open an e-mail attachment without first scanning it with your anti-virus software.
Be careful out there.

Me too!
The same thing happened to me. About a week ago, I got an email from Clay Stalker. I recognized the name, and although we have never really met, I did pass him going into Cuttyhunk Harbor this summer. After I opened the email and the attachment, my system slowed down terribly and hangs up all the time now. The funny thing is, I assumed it came in with one of those porno newsletters I was looking at. What should I do now?

I have not sent any e-mails to you or Paul, so regretfully, you are the victim of one of those virus's that use people's names and sends out messages randomly....these work as Catherine described them. I send a lot of messages and have never passed along a virus that I know of, and I always keep my software current to keep up with the latest virus's out there. The best defense is good virus protection....sorry my name was involved, but the messages were not from me.

Re: RE: email virus - BEST defense!
And an even better defense is to trash the m$ software and use Linux! OK, I admit that I'm a geek-sailor, but I have received *many* viruses designed for all of the weaknesses of "ms/lookout!" and never have a problem. Besides, we all should be sailing more and emailing less...
