CD33 Windlass

Post by Dennis Ward »

I need to install a windlass on my 1981 CD33. I can not see running
wires & installing circuit protection, switches, etc. for a windless that would only be used once a day at most and so am leaning toward a
SimpsonLawrance Manual Hyspeed 510. Does anybody have any
experiance with this unit or any others on a Cape Dory 33 ???
I'm open to any and all suggestions!

Thanks Dennis Ward "WindWard"

I use a 2 speed manual S/L 555 on my CD 40 and it is great. On a prior boat (Westsail 32) I had a single speed S/L - probably like the one you are talking about. It too was fine. The 2 speed gives you a lot more power to break the anchor out of mud. I like to use it when I sail off the anchor. No motor all day - can't do that with an electric one! Make sure you locate it over the deepest part of the chain locker because the chain piles up in a cone and could jam the incoming chain. Also important to match gypsy to the type of chain (BBB, hi tensile etc). I've never cared for the rope to chain arrangement they have but perhaps it has been improved.

I installed a Simpson-Lawrence Horizontal Windlass on my CD 33 about a year ago. Used it everyday while cruising the Bahamas this Spring. It works great. An advantage over other SL vertical windlasses is its low profile which doesn't clutter the foredeck. The chain (5/16")-rope (1/2" nylon) gypsy works well also. It was not difficult to install, if you decide to go with a horizontal, let me know and I'll give you some hints on the installation.
