12 volt oil change pumps
Has anyone used with success the 12 volt type extractors to pump out via the dipstick tube? I have used the "Old Boy" type, but am wondering if there is anything new or better in the way of removal!
Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: 12 volt oil change pumps
Given that pumping speed for crankcase oil thru a dipstick tube is determined mainly by oil temps, the vacuum systems such as the one I have myself (url with photo below) work about as well as motorized versions, are about as much trouble to hook up, use and then dispose of the oil, and are about 1/3 the cost initially.

Re: 12 volt oil change pumps
We use a Topsider for the tranny and it works just fine. We have a Perkins manual pump on the crankcase and the biggest problem we have had with it is the pressure it can create on a container if it isn't vented. What a mess!

Re: 12 volt oil change pumps
I have the standard hand pump/suction device that normally draws the engine oil out of the dipstick tube. However, I added a hose and fitting attached to the bottom of the crankcase that allows me to draw the hot oil from there instead of thru the dipstick tube. In addition, I replaced the 1/8 inch hose with a 3/8 inch hose that speeds up the time required to completely empty the crankcase oil. It still is a messy project but it works.

Re: 12 volt oil change pumps
I have one and hate it although it is probably my own fault. I have a Perkins 4.108 and go in through the crankcase as Ken Coit describes. I suspect the hose on the internal side might not be long enough and that is why I never seen to get more than two quarts out. My problem seems to be I can't get to the bottom of the pan. If anybody out there has some input, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks.

Re: 12 volt oil change pumps
I was in need of a devise to extract oil from our Yanmar and started the search at EBAY. I came across a product called LiquidVac. It looked sturdy, all positive feedback with quite a few units for sale so I decided to take a chance. Won the auction at a cost of 24.95 plus shipping. The unit works great and, in my opinion, is of very high quality. The pump is integrated in the tank and is operated by clamping the hose, Pump 30 times, insert the hose in the dip stick hole, release the clamp and when you hear a sound similar to a straw sucking the bottom of an empty glass it's done. I was so proud not a drop of oil escaped - that is until I unscrewed and dropped the Oil filter. I highly recommend the devise. (I have no affiliation)

Re: 12 volt oil change pumps
I already posted my thoughts on my electric oil pump. I just used a product yesterday to change my oil and was the best I EVER used. It is a Tempo Oil Boy Fliud Extractor kit. It is on page 321 of the West Marine catalog. As always, I'm sure its cheaper at Defender. It works. Its clean. Its awesome. I am buying one!
