Replacing Alcohol Stove on CD30

Post by Pete Zwiefelhofer »

I'm thinking of replacing the alcohol stove on my CD30. I'd like to hear from people who have done this. What make and model stove did you choose and why? How did it fit? What kind of modifications did you have to make to get a good fit? Where did you install the tank? Thanks.

Do you presently have a two-burner Origo?
If you would indulge my idle curiosity - why would you want to replace it?

I tore the whole thing out...stove, tank, hoses, etc. A long time ago I managed to start a nice fire in the cabin (due more to ignorance than equipment). I found, however, that cruising for a week or so does not require the use of an appliance with the 'hassle' factor of the intalled stove. I got one of those GloMaster propane stoves (single burner but I tell the GloMaster guy to make a two burner model every year at the boat show). It's easy, clean, fast (flame is hot) and compact. I cut a piece of boarding to size to fit in the opening left by the stove and used it for storage. Now, I've installed a small refrigerator in the space. I don't regret my decision one bit.

Pete,
I just purchased Hanalei (CD-30) this spring and it had the original Hillerange alcohol stove. I removed the stove from the boat, took it home and for $5 per burner, rebuilt the entire thing. It works jsut like new now, and I wouldn't replace it for propane and the added worry of a heavier than air gas on board. Search this site on Hiller Range or stove, I gave someone an entire rundown on what I had to do to rebuild it. Seaward Products in California was a great help. In the end, you may just want to rebuild it!

Currently I am replacing the stove on my 1977 Cape Dory 30. Previously a very unsafe looking two burner propane stove was installed. It looked like it came out of a motorhome and operated on disposable bottles.

I spent several months considering fuel alternatives and stoves. The idea of a diesel stove appealed to me because I already had the fuel onboard. However the heat created by these stoves is appropriate for New England or the Pacific Northwest, not the South. The alcohol stoves looked like fancy sterno stoves, and alcohol's safety record is more percieved than actual. CNG's storage tank looks like a scuba tank and stores explosive gas at ~ 2000 psi. I finally settled on propane. A fuel I was familiar with, has high heat output, is readily available, and has a large variety of marine stoves and accesories made for it.

My new stove is a propane four burner with oven and broiler made by Broadwater of Australia. This is one of the best stoves I have seen on the market. Broadwater has a site on the web at www.nov.com.au/buisiness/stoves. Their two burner would probably fit better on a CD 30, but the deal I ran across was too sweet to pass up.

I have completed installation of the stove and am now working on the support systems. I have a six pound aluminum propane tank that I will mount on the stern rail with a solenoid valve. On the Stbd side of the galley I mounted a solenoid control panel with gas alarm made by Trident. The gas sensor will go under the stove at deck level. In addition I have a carbon monoxide alarm and smoke detector centrally located in the head area.

What kind of frig did you install? How did you secure it?. Does it run on battery or shore power? Thanks!

I have a Hiller. It's a hassle trying to get the pressure right. My wife doesn't care for the 2 foot flames that result if you bleed a little too much fuel into the burner pan. It doesn't get very hot.

Pete,
Hanalei (CD-30) has it's original Hillerange by Seaward. I completely rebuilt it and it works fine. To avoid the 2 foot flames problem, I purchased a bottle of "SNOOP", that is used to leak check gas connections. Empty out the soap solution and refill the bottle with stove alcohol. The bottle has a small extendable hose, pull it out a ways, give it a 3-4 second squees (sp) into the center of the burner and you will have just the right amount of alcohol to pre-heat the burner. Let it burn out coompletely, and light the burner like a gas range. Works well for the oven burner as well, no more quessing!!!And no more BIG flames!!!

Right on, Dave. I did a similar thing, except we were cruising when I finally decided to use an external prime and used an empty Aunt Jemima Maple Syrup bottle to hold the alcohol prime to heat the stove. Life was happily a LOT less exciting on the stove front ever since then.
