I am considering purchasing a CD 28 or 27 to replace my Typhoon, which has become to small for me. What kind of problems should I be looking for(late 70's vintage)? Also, since I will mostly be singlehanding, I would be very interested in hearing experiences from people who have done it on this type of boat. Thanks! Chris Brown P.S. Anyone want to buy a Typhoon?!

Re: CD 28:Problems?
Chris, I have a 1977 CD 28 that I singlehand quite often. The boat is real easy to single hand as when you adjust the sails right it just wants to run in a straight line. This makes leaving the tiller easy. Of course mine has a tiller which I much prefer.Chris Brown wrote: I am considering purchasing a CD 28 or 27 to replace my Typhoon, which has become to small for me. As for problems start with the motor. If it has not been repowered it probably has a Volvo in it. This is fine until it breaks and then you might as well buy a new motor as try and fix it. I didn't really have any problems with mine that needed addressing right away. As always you should get the boat surveyed before you buy it. Good luck if you have any questions don't hesitate to e-mail me at camroll@together.net

I've been sailing a 78 CD28 Hull205 pretty much single handed for two years. I love the boat and it responds very well in a sea way. However, the addition of an Autohelm ST2000 this year made my life a lot easier when I had to go forward to raise and douse sails. I've had no unusual problems with the boat. The Volvo MD7 is a real workhorse if you remember to keep her oil and fuel clean. Good luck, I know you will fall in love like the rest of us CD'ers.

Re: CD 28:Problems?
I had my Volvo MD7B rebuilt last year, and the entire cost including pullout and reinstall time was $2500. A new engine will run you 2-3x that amount to begine with, and you will make some structural adjustments to accomodate the new engine. So the advice that you might as well replace it is incorrect.
I now have an engine that starts on the first compression stroke..even after sitting for a full winter. The mechanic said thatt he MD7B was designed to be run continuously from oil change to oil change..or 100 hours.
That said, I will admit that parts are unbelievably high (Injector pump runs $4800 at DePetro Kay (sp?))..but show me a marine diesel that isn't.

I have a CD 28 1977 in Mattapoisett, just across Buzzards Bay from you (I see you are on capecodnet), and it's on the market for $20K. We've had the boat since 1991 and really love it. I want to move up to a 31 or 32. My wife wants to keep this boat. In all honesty (which is somewhat dumb if I'm trying to sell it) I have to say I wanted to get a somewhat younger boat. I have had the engine overhauled (for about $4K), and have noticed a few failures in the eletrcial system from time to time (e.g., I had a short in the spreader lights, and had to replace some of the wiring to the bow lights two years ago). but these I attribute simply to age. It's been a fine boat, and if you want to come look at one, even if you don't want to buy just yet, email me and I'd be glad to show you around the boat.
