CD28 & mid-boom, cabin-top traveller???

Has anyone done this, seen this, or otherwise know whether it is practicle (or not!) to do? I have tiller version and am seriously thinking of moving the mainsheet to mid-boom, cabin-top for easier trimming while racing as well as single-hand sailing.

Michael, It certainly is possible, and was a factory option. Our previous 28 (#383; 1985) was so equipped, and one of the reasons we liked her. The arrangement is identical to the CD 30. All parts are the same, although the staysail sheet is to starboard on the 28, as you know. I've got photos of our 30 and our old 28, if they'll help.

Micheal, I put on a cabin top traveler several years ago on my CD 28. I still feel it is the single greatest improvement I have ever made to my boat. The boat sails better and is safer. I don't know the set-up on the CD28, but I would tend to the WHY response you got. I recently moved my traveler from the cabin top to the cockpit (CD30) and wish I had done it sooner. It is way stronger than mid-boom sheeting, you can easily get at the pin stops (I didn't have room for control lines on the coach), it takes less purchase since leverage is increased/offsetting the presumed additional sheetlength (I am using the same sheet for 4:1 in the cockpit as I did on the
complicated coach arrangement), I got rid of the pockets in the dodger nightmare, and when jibing or whatever, any tangled lines are at my feet rather then forward of the cockpit - as I single hand mostly, this matters. The only down side is it is in the cockpit, less comfortable for hanging out, ect, but I find this minor compared to the advantages, and you get an extra handhold to boot!

Perhaps the layout you have on the CD28 has other problems. Nonetheless, all else being equal, the further aft the sheet attachment on the boom, the stronger and greater the control. Cabin top arrangements are fine for what they are, to clear clutter from the cockpit.

Thanks for you input. I suspect that your CD30 has a wheel instead of a tiller like KAYLA. That alone can change the way you do things and where you want things!
