I have worked for a year and a half to get Nepenthe my Cape Dory 36 ready for the Bahamas and figured I had fixed almost everything. My wife and I left Groton, CT on Sept. 2, 2002 and we are now in Annapolis, MD. Anyway, I had a PSS seal dripless installed before leaving and two days ago I had water under the engine plus the normal oil drips from the Perkins. I noticed a patena of green around the stuffing box on the rudder shaft and went darn it. I tightened today but the square waves the the Chesapeake seem to get me every time. Does someone know what size packing is used on the CD36 1 1/2 inch diameter ss rudder shaft? I have read all the books and I cannot find any reference to this. I can buy easily here but need the size?
Thanks for your help.

Any good marina should have the packing or you could try calling ROBINHOOD MARINE in Robinhood, Maine as they still mfg. the 36.Ask for Dave Perry. My problem on my 33 was backing of the gland nut far enough to install the packing. On my boat you would have to remove the steering quadrant to perform this job.
