Mooring line length (exactly the same?)

Post by Dennis Truett »

I've just bought a new SS ring and had two new Mooring lines weaved on to it. (eliminates shakles) I noticed one line was made 2 inches longer than the other. When I got to the boat to install, I noticed that my existing lines also have a difference of 2 inches. Was this a mistake, or is there a reason for it? (I should really learn how to weave myself)

Our YC recommends different lenght pennant (18 inch I believe). It is built in redundancy.

We moored our CD27 for 6 years. I made rather longish mooring lines of equal length (so that the angle from the chocks to the mooring point was less than what it would be with shorter lines).

What I found was that the boat would swing slightly on its mooring when the wind was moderate. This alternated the tension on the two lines, each having more tension when the boat swung to that side (port line tense when boat swings to port). I figured this evened out the wear.

When the wind was howling, both lines were tense. I figured each line was taking half the load which would mean less likely for either line to part. No problems in all the six years.

Always use a chafe guard on the lines at the chock, though.
