CD-25 Winter Project

Post by Dave Jane Brandt »

Jane and I just purchased a 1976 CD-25, it’s our first sail boat and we are really excited about it. The CD-25 has such beautiful lines. Our plan is to rework the boat this winter and have it ready to go in the spring. The boat has been out of the water for about two years and needs some attention. I would like to get in contact with someone who has reworked their CD and would be willing to help out out with specific questions we have as we get started on our project.

Thanks

Being excited and thinking the lines are beautiful are the two things that will make the work worth it. I've been re-working my CD30 for the last two years and love to walk away a bit, and look back at it. I've not found anything as satisfying as making a pretty/solid/performing CD. You will find many helpers on this site. I'm 350 miles north of you. I'll be glad to answer some questions. You can e-mail me directly also.

Mkelsey wrote: the wonderful thing about CD25s' is there are lots of them out there and lots of good people willing to share info. Such as JimL and Sailor Jon, from whom I have learned a lot. Good luck.

Hi Dave
Welcome Aboard! I own # 249 a 1975 25. I have owned Suzi Q for 2 years and have completed a long list of jobs on her since then. Usually when I have a specific question I would just post it here on the board. Sometimes those responces would lead to more detailed e-mails discussing the issue. Help is always here so the only trick is to decide where to start. I will go with my usual advise of, if your wiring is still original, replace it. Doing this will create an enormous mess. While you clean up, fix everything else.
Feel free to e-mail me directly anytime with questions etc. Best of luck. I know you will enjoy her.

Hi Folks In July 02 we purchased hull #607 a 1978 25CD which had NO maintenance ever, and did a complete refit, and are now sailing her and thrilled with the results. The refit included new Awlgrip from the rail up, strip and varnish all trim, strip and varnish interior wood and paint liner, install jib furler and new main and genoa, replace standing and running rigging, new cushions, new engine, and a host of small items. It was a do-it-ourselves project, and I can give you a time and expense account of anypart. Was it worth it? You bet it was. The boat has good bones and a lot of time left in her.
I spent a lot of time going through the archives on this website, and it was invaluable. Ther's not much about he boat that is not covered by very knowledgeable people. If I can help, just ask.

Dave and Jane-

Ditto on Will's and Chuck's message- I have done major work on just about every system on my 1975 CD25 hull 314 and would be very happy to share my experiences, both good and bad. If you have not had a survey done on your boat, I heartily recommend it- it is the best way I know of having an expert identify the major (read: the boat will sink if you don't do this) problems and will provide you with immeasurable help in setting a list of priorities for your work- I promise you that if you get a good surveyor, the money spent on the survey will save you that amount several times over as you proceed on your work. Provided you didn't buy a boat with major structural damage/decay, you will not be disappointed with the time you spend on this project- in present-day dollars, you would have to pay $30K + to purchase a new boat of the same quality as a well-refurbished CD25.
