PASSAGE OF A FRONTAL SYSTEM ON SUPERIOR

Post by Larry DeMers »

Hi All,

I am starting to realize that summer is not endless, as my mind seems to long for.

Last weekend, even though we were in a sweltering 90 degrees, the geese were forming in large vees of hundreds of birds..heading south.
The winds and weather have switched to the fall patterns with a real punch to it. 40kt gales all last weekend, with 9 fters. So ok, we limped home just fine under reduced sail and rain gear -we were getting fairly well watered down by wave tops that got caught above the bow as we cut into them..they ran back over the cabin top, over the inflatable in it's heavy canvas deck bag, up and over the dodger..and smack into my puss.

So, this weekend should be a better one by odds, right? Not what the weather-guessers are thinking. Below is the Open Waters Forecast for Lake Superio/West half as of 9/12/2. It depicts in neat textual fashion, the passage of a cold front of respectable proportions and it's effects on the areas weather patterns.

Normal winds are from the SW this time of year, and this puppy will swing things around from SE thru NW and blow at 40 kts again..14 fters this time. Jeesh..no way..been there, and that is brutal unless from the NE, where the waves spread out a bit, giving the boat some reaction time. These NWers will be close together and like moving buildings. It will be incredible to photograph however.

But, if we get out Friday night and tuck into a good cove with SW protection, we can weather it and return Sunday in moderate SW5-15..
We pull out in 4 weeks, which seems inordinately wrong timewise. First snow flurries are 4 weeks away on avg. Well, thing to do is to enjoy the heck out of each day we have left, and hope for a fast winter, heh?
Ok..here's that weather report:

Hi Larry, Sounds like a very interesting weekend coming up for you.Your weather today is our weather tomorrow down here on Lake Ontario. My question to you is will this front you are getting going to produce one of Lake Superiors infamous "Seiche" tides to go along with the gale waves. I bet you didn't remember when you told us about that phenomenon up in Cheesehead Territory. (Go Packers) It was 3/13/02. Very interesting. Do the other Great Lakes get it? Sounds like "Surf's Up" Kowabunga dude! Hangin Ten, John Dunn Oswego, N.Y.

Yup, I expect we will have to time our exit of the dock for slack tide or get caught like we did last weekend. The damn tide snuck up on me, heh, translated means '..Larry forgot to check the dolphin pole for the telltale V caused by the currents'.
Both pressure differentials and high winds cause these Seiche Tides, but the pressure differential one is larger by far (seen 36inches, record I heard was around 5ft.).

We've got a little excitement headed our way, too. Looks like Hannah is headed right at us. If she doesn't get worse, it won't be a huge deal, but likely will move Slow Dance anyway. Got a race scheduled for tomorrow. Can't wait for fall when it cools down a tad and these storms subside.

Larry,
Of Course, Summer is endless; at least if you live in more hospitable latitudes,e.g. South Florida. I did spend six years in New England, where I was introduced to Winter. I didn't like it. My Yankee friends had always told me that "on a given day, the best sailing in the world is in NEw England." While I agree with them, I discovered that there are only about six (6) "given days" in a New England year. The rest are (1)foggy, (2) no wind, (3) incredible storm, or (4) foggy!
Our main weather problems here (exclusive of hurricane scares) are July and August, when the wind only gives you a few hours a day for respectable sailing.
Bon Voyage!

Will,

While I may end up in FLA in the future, I still treasure the New England Delights. Two weeks ago, I took a new acquaintance and 30' Seawind owner out for a sail. Both the wind and seas were up on an overcast day. We averaged 6 knots with just staysail and main (no reefs). Although we got wet, he was amazed at the stability and comfort we experienced. Now he can't wait to finish restoring the Seawind.

The next day was similar with less seas. The wife fell asleep in the cockpit!

Can't wait for the fall colors on the Taunton River! Hopefully it will occur on one of those six days of sun Will described.

Fair winds,
