Yanmar 1 GM--full or empty tank for off-season?

Post by JimS »

I have a CD22D with a Yanmar 1 GM. Is it best to pump out tank and leave empty for the off-season or to add conditioner/stabilizer and top off the tank? Boat is on the hard. The CD Manual says it is best to empty the tank. A Yanmar distributor told me just to top off tank. He said that it takes about two years for the fuel to go bad. This is what others have also told me. I started with a fresh tank of diesel in June 2002 and replaced fuel filters. Comments? Thanks.

while not Yanmar-specific, most advise I have heard is to leave the tank mostly full. Full enough to prevent air coming in and causing condensation, leading to corrosion of the tank, yet not completely full, so as to allow the fuel room for thermal expansion.
needless to say, add some sort of diesel stabilizer. then maybe sail vigorously to mix it thoroughly in the fuel.

hope this is of use.
