Anybody buy a dodger recently?

Post by chuck yahrling »

Pursuant to a recent post by C. Monaghan, I called Island Nautical in City Is., NY. They want $975 for a new dodger for a CD-27. This seems unreasonably high. Anybody got a better vendor? (I don't want to make a Sail-Rite kit.)

Chuck, in 1983 I paid something like $700 for PERI's Dodger. True, it was custom made by Paul McSorley with a good stainless steel frame, and today it would probably be at least double the cost. Over the years I never regretted the money spent on a quality dodger. I think Marion Lewenstein paid in the neighborhood of $2000 for hers, custom made, and that really was a superb dodger, stainless steel handles at the back and on the side of the dodger...when the time came to replace PERIs dodger, if I still owned her, I'd have gotten one like Marion's.

You pays for what you gets, a dodger takes a beating and becomes a handhold when moving fore and aft, an important safety issue, ensure you get a good one and don't just buy for price.

I replaced my dodger with a new one from North Sails in Annapolis. They custom fitted the new dodger on my CD28 with great results! The price was less than your quote.

Chuck,

Most of the places I just recieved pricing for my new dodger (CD26) was about $875 to $900 w/o frame. With a SS frame it looked like about $1100. You're right...it is pretty expensive. The price will be greater (possible couple hundred) depending on the dodgers features. Very basic is fixed front window and sides with aluminium or SS frame. I personally like the SS because once bent accidently, the aluminium will snap or weaken if you try to straigthen it. But I think you will find the price will be an average of about $900 these days for your boat.

Ralph DiMattia in Quincy (617-328-1100) or Dave Howard in Marshfield, MA (781-834-1382) are the best around.

Remedy came with a spare dodger (that I have not tried to fit to the boat); you are welcome to use it as a pattern if you cannot find one.

Re new dodger, boy, reading other replies life on the East Coast is obviously cheaper than out here in Silicon Valley area. Anyway, I bought a custom made dodger, SS, with handholds in various places, zip out windows, couple pockets for $2000. All the local quotes were in the same price range. This was a year ago january, so almost two years now. I was completely happy with what I got, and absolutely delighted with the handholds which proved a real boon. I had a CD30, recently sold. You don't need the zip out window if you always want dodger up, but I like feel of wind in my face without having to take down the whole canvas structure,so I was willling to pay the extra couple hundred. handhold framing also cost extra. So if those two items were eliminated, the dodger would have cost about $1500.

Duncan,

Good to see you!!!

Ralph isn't doing dodgers anymore, but if you ask, he'd refer you to Poor Mann's in Weymouth. They repaired mine last winter... restitched, new glass, zipper, etc. I have the number somewhere if information doesn't get it.
