Hour Meter on Yanmar 1GM?

Post by Jim »

Does the Yanmar 1GM have an hour meter and if so, where is it located? If not, which engines were so equipped? I was trying to determine the # of hours on it since there was no engine log. Engine is on a 1983 CD22D. Thanks.

Jim:

Unfortunately Cape Dory's did not come with with an hour
meter on the Yanmar 1GM unless they were installed by the
owner.

My 25D has a 1GM that came without an hour meter. I put one on that linked to the starter switch. I bought one of the little rectangular ones and placed it on the bulkhead behind the sink. Wires had to run to the starter but it works fairly well.

Our Volvo MD11 did not have one, and of course the first question people asked when we listed it (just the engine) was the engine hours. fortunately, its limited use made it easy to estimate.

but when we repowered to a Yanmar last year I made sure to install one. it's really pretty easy, particularly since I attached it to a metal bracket in the engine compartment (you certainly don't need to look at the gauge regularly). if you put one on a little "late in the game," you just leave it hooked to a car battery until those past hours are "logged."

Hello Jim

I installed an hour meter on Rhapsody (w/1GM) and wired it to the Oil Pressure Sending Switch (as suggested my an august member of this board). That way the only time it is "timing" the engine is when it is actually running (as long as the oil pressure sending unit is working).

I installed it in the bulkhead within the engine compartment (2" round model). Simple and straight forward.
