CAPE DORY 33 Gelcoat cracks, cockpit sole

Everyone has that problem. Mostly, they're cosmetic. Search the archives and you'll find all sorts of discussion on crack treatment.

My CD 31 made in 1984 had the same problem. When I bought the boat, the surveyor said the cockpit sole needed to be reinforced either by installing aluminum I beams under the sole, or putting in a wooden sole. (I did not have water penetration through the gel coat.) I choose the latter option and installed a teak sole made of 2 inch by two inch teak with seams payed with Detco sealant. While I was at it, I installed a hatch forward of the binnacle to facilitate inspection of the stuffing box, transmission, muffler, exhaust etc. Although not big enough to crawl through (unless you're tiny) it lets in wonderful sunlight and air and is handy to hand tools through to the person working below. It's a common problem and not too serious unless you have water penetration. As I recall the cockpit sole had a core of fir plywood rather than balsa wood. There are a lot of posts about this in the archives.

Thank you for info on gelcoat cracks. I installed I-beam under the cockpit sole. I was thinking along the lines of replacing the gelcoat.
Any idea of cost ?
