CD Typhoon vs. Sea Sprite 23/West Coast contacts?

Post by Kevin Jones »

Anybody out there have any good info on how the CD Typhoon and the Sea Sprite compare? I am specifically interested in there sailing ability in lighter air and how they compare in "overnighting". Any specific structural problems for either boat? Most importantly, does anybody know of any contacts on the West Coast for either boat?

Thanks in advance for any info.

My Sea Sprite 23 flys past Typhoons in light air....or any air. I always say,"hey mister.....who shrunk your boat?" Not everyone gets it or thinks it's funny.......oh well. The Typhoon excells in heavy air handeling according to people who have owned both.

Kevin I have owned and sailed extensively both boats, sailing out of Ft Lauderdale Fl, in open ocean mostly. I currently sail a SS23, and have completely updated the boat.
While the basic differences are obvious, bigger is better, faster, more comfortable, safer[?} etc, there are many more subtle differences.
The intended use is what should be clearly evaluated. Then you can better judge which boat is the best for you. There is a wide difference in the handling characterics. Both are bullet proof as far as construction. Both are self bailing-very important. Where you will sail is a prime cosideration. Costs differ, but sometimes not by much.
The typhoon is a much easier more forgiving boat to sail in any conditons. the SS23 gives more performance because it is simply bigger. This however makes it somewhat more difficult to handle. Either boat is a cynch to single hand when properly rigged

Kevin,

My experience is only with the little Typhoon. It is surprizingly good in light air for such a heavy/large wetted surface boat. We have often passed M and MC Scows on our lake. Our sails are new though. I think our main, which is fully battened at the top and was put on by the previous owner for racing really helps. I would not expect that kind of performance from every typhoon. We reef at about 15 knots and put a second one in at about 25. The boat is wet in the bigger waves, but if the cockpit lockers are effectively sealed little water gets below. If I were buying one I would look for crazing around the mast step and chain plates and any dip in the coachroof around the mast. Many sink down from mast compression and ours did so much that we could not tighten the shouds! A compression post and beam down below solved that problem nicely. Also I would check the bedding of all the hardware including the toerail. Check for play and delamination in the rudder. All in all a great little boat with a fanatical following. The Sea sprite 23 though seems equally as good! Good luck.

Ron,

Thanks for your info on the comparison between the CD Typhoon and the SS 23. I will be doing a fair amount of offshore sailing/cruising and would like a bigger boat. Do you have any idea if many SS 23's made it to the West Coast? The alternative is for me to have one shipped from the East Coast which adds considerable cost to the project. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks again for your info.

Are you referring to the Typhoon Senior? This is a 22' CD that is much closer in size to the SS23. Also the same designer. I have owned the Typhoon Senior for 4 years and love it. Would be happy to answer any questions.

Eric, I currently have a Typhoon ("Jr/19" ?) which I love but am considering moving up. I have a few questions about the Senior:

Is the motor mounted on a bracket similar to the "Jr/19" or is there a well? Does this boat typically have lifelines/pullpit/pushpit? What is your impression of the mast mounting structural situation?

Much obliged for your advice.

I owned a 1977 SS23 in Hingham, Mass for several years. I also have sailed but never owned a TY. I loved my Sea Sprite. She sailed well in all conditions and my wife and I always felt safe and comfortable. She was quick for her class but did not point as well as we would have liked. The motor well leaves something to be desired. I always pulled the motor after each sail and stored it below. Mentioning of the cabin, there really isn't much of one. It has everything you need but it is very tight. The Sea Sprite is really a sailor's boat. It loves a hard breeze and looks great on any point of sail. I also still think that the SS23 is the most pretty boat in any harbor. My wife used to make fun of me because I would stop rowing my dingy after a sail and just look at our SS23. I really miss her. I am also on the west coast now in Portland OR. I'm looking for a CD27. If you get any leads on a good source for Alberg boats out here, please let me know.

Good Sailing
Mark
