A couple weeks ago someone posted a question asking if those oil-eating bilge cleaners really work. As I had just dumped some into the bilge, I am replying now.
The stuff I used was by, I think, ESI, and has a picture of a green monster eating a bilge-grease sandwich.
Anyway, results are unfortunatly not completely positive. The water I pumped out (into a bucket w/ a hand pump) didn't have that oily sheen on top, but there was a lot a black "goop" mixed into the water. What exactly that goop is I couldn't tell you, but I'm guessing that it wouldn't be a good idea to discharge it overboard.
That said, I put in another dose of the cleaner. I still got almost a full bottle, and it can't hurt!
