LABOR DAY WEEKEND ON THE CHESAPEAKE

Post by David Sabourin »

For all you CD'rs that couldn't make it out this past weekend, it's too bad. Beth & the Hatter and I logged over 110nm. We left Deale Friday at 5:00 and motored up to Mill Creek in Annapolis and anchored for the night. We left Mill Creek about 9:00 the next morning to find fair skies and a brisk northerly breeze. We tacked our way up the Bay under the bridge and spotted some old friends aboard Rusty Rudder ( a Tatoosh 42) and they were heading up the Chester River to Grays Inn Creek. We were headed for the Corsica so we traded tacks for about three hours and found ourselves nearing the Corsica in a fresh wind of about 18 to 20 kts. We were able to sail right to the mouth of the river and found a nice secure anchorage out of most of the northerly wind. Several raftups in the area dragged during the night and made for some neat entertainment. Sunday found us being rained on by Mother Nature but we set out for Kent Narrows sailing with headsail only making over six kts with the wind just abeam of our stern. We made it through the Narrows without a hitch and continued down Eastern Bay watching several boats headed back to Deale. About 1:00pm we made it to to the Wye and ducked into Shaw Bay to see if any of the CD people were about. By this time it was coming down in buckets. Hardest rain I've seen in quite some time. No one was there so we came along side the Maritime Museum and had a meal at the Crab Claw. Great food and even better service since the place was empty. Then for the night we went over to Leeds Creek and ducked into a little cove and anchored for the night. Monday fjound better weather, no rain and still a brisk northerly blowing so we motored up to the point and set sail for home. It took only four hours to make it back to Deale. We were over 7kts at times.

All in all a great weekend. We did see three CDs, Shana a CD36 owned by Jerry Axler, a CD27 named Impromptu and another 36 we recognized from Rock Hall but could not get the name.

WHERE WERE THE REST OF YOU?

DAVID

I'm surprised we didn't see you on Sunday, David. We slogged for 9 hours on Sunday into the (great) wind while the rain held off on our way to Grays Inn Creek off the Chester River. We were in the same raft as Rusty Rudder (if it is the same Rusty Rudder). Then decided to take advantage of the easterly wind to surf home to the South River (Annapolis) - making it in 6 hours while the rain poured buckets. The rain could not dampen what was otherwise an exhilarating rocket ride under a double reefed main. So we would have been in the Chester River about the time you were between the Corsica and Kent Narrows.
