Hot Shower on a CD30

Post by JD Johnson »

I would like to install pressure water and a shower on my CD 30 Ketch. I have read all the previous post concerning this subject, and have concluded that some CD 30's came with this option and that some of you have added it. My problem is that I haven't been able to find a water heater small enough to fit thru the locker. The widest point of the opening is about 12", but it gets smaller as it angles back. Can anyone sugest a heater, or manufacturer to call? Also where is the best location for the pump and accumulater? Is it a problem to let the shower drain directly into the bilge and pump out with the bilge pump? What about a shower curtain, is it nesasary, or should I just seal the wood good? If anyone has any insight, advice, diagram or pictures they could share, I would be greatful.
Thanks, JD

JD,
I installed pressure water on Hanalei (CD-30 cutter) this spring when I bought her. It wasn't to difficult, the pump and accumulator are on the starboard bulkhead of the engine compartment. I ran the feed lines from port & starboard tanks to a copper threaded pipe maniflod with two valves, a tee (outlet) and two inlet nipples. I used ball gas valves from the local hardware store for the valves(system pressure is negative here, so type of valve should be cheapest and easiest to operate - hence gas valves!). From the pump, I ran one water line to the accumulator (hard pipe any bends) and then tow a second manifold in the starboard lazzerett (sp). Off this manifold, I have one line to the Hot water heater, and two Cold water lines to the galley and head. Running the water llines to the galley is easy, out in the open. To run the lines to the head, you will need to remove the starboard cabin seatee cover, about 12 screws, which will give you access to the water tank and the area through and under the ice box. I used a 1 inch hole saw on a drill to cut through the forward bulkhead(had to move the tank forward a bit for clearence), lower center of the ice box cabinet, fished a snake through the hole to the engine compartment, pulled the hose right through with a little contorsionistic moves. I basically routed the tubing to follow the installed line from the tank to the head hand pump. I left the hand pump in the head operational, hence I ran two new lines to the head.
I haven't yet installed the heater, but it will go into the starboard lazerette. My biggest problem is the hook up of the engine coolant line from the engine to the heater and back to the engine. I don't know where to attach to the engine.
We have used the shower, cold only, this summer. Shower curtain not necessary, would add clutter, and simiple wipe down after the shower, cleans everything nicely. Do cover the toilet tissue holder, soggy paper is NO good! As far as shower water in the bilge, it's like any gray water, won't hurt the bilge, but we always pump it out the day we use the shower. Hanalei has a fiberglass pan in the bilge that appears to run from the head drain(deck grating) to the first cabin sole bilge hatch. Nice, but the water eventually ends up in the bilge.
For the faucets, I used a single stem, double valve galley faucet that was about $85. The hole in the sink had to be inlarged, this was a job. Had to open it up about 1/8" in diameter, used a hand grinder, the stainless steel is TOUGH. The head faucet is a twin valve with pop up(for the shower), plastic, about $25. Head faucet was easier to install, measure carefully, just drill two holes through the counter top and wa-laa!
Enough for now, if you find out how to hook up to the engine goolant system, please let me know here.

Re: JD, forgot to ask, I need a cradle!

J.D.,
Do you have a cradle for your CD-30? I've been looking for pictures/measurements so that I can build one for Hanalei. I'll send you a drawing of the pressure water system if you can get me some measurements/drawing of a cradle. Actually, I'll send you a drawing of the water system if you want, regardless of whether or not you have a cradle, but any help would be appreciated. Thanks, D. Stump

D.
Sorry I don't have a cradle or any drawings. I wouldn't mind having a cradle myself.

JD,

Looking in the newest issue of Cruising World I found an advert for water heaters which look smaller in diameter than that which is on my 25D, thought they might be of interest.

Company name is Isotemp, www.great-water.com

Best of Luck
