Re: Engine
Also check your motor mounts. Bad mounts will definately make it vibrate alot. One thing to note also is the thread the mounts are bolted into in the bed - the mounts can look fine but the thread can sometimes get stripped. But with the engine in, because of its weight, it's very difficult to notice this. I think you'd either have to hoist it slightly or take a real careful look while it's running.DON wrote:Ken wrote: I noticed my universal 18 seems to vibrate alot. HAVE YOUR ALIGNMENT CHECKED
Repowering is definately possible, and the newer diesels from yanmar and the like are really quiet in comparison. just be prepared that it can be really expensive. particularly if the bed has to be modified, new prop and shaft, etc.
what size is your CD?

Re: Engine
The current issue of Good Old Boat has a good article on repowering and what to consider and how to plan the project.

Re: Engine
I agree with the above recommendations and think that is a good place to start. If those do not cure the problem then look further.
In addition check for bad injectors, clogged filters, and poor compression. She may be firing weak on one cylinder.
If the problem is a cylinder with poor compression then a rebuild is much cheaper than a new engine. I worked a deal with a mechanic..did all the teardown and part of the rebuild myself and rebuild a Westerbeke 21A for about $1500.00. Made a big difference in everything about the engine.
How does she start? Color of exhaust?
