Bilge pump discharge line CD25

Post by Jim - Second Wind »

On my CD25 I've got one thru hull on the starboard side and two (a larger & smaller one) on the port side. I think the starboard outlet is for my bilge pump but it is about 12 inches under the waterline. Shouldn't my discharge be above the water-line? Although I hate the idea of drilling another hole above the water I'm concerned about water coming in thru the pump. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Well based on my 1975 CD25 the starboard thru hull is for the starboard cockpit drain.. the port ones are for the port cockpit drain/sink Y valve combo and the other for the marine head. Don't know if this was the original configuration though..

On my 1978 CD25, there are two through-hulls under the waterline for each of the cockpit drains. There are 2 above the waterline on the starboard side for the bilge pumps. My sink drain is t'd into one of the cockpit drains.

My Bilge pumps into lazzert on starboard

It's above the waterline, as it should be.

Hi-

FWIW, the through-hulls on my CD25 hull 314 are set up the same as on CaptJT's boat. The Groco 3/4" neoprene plug seacocks on the port and starboard cockpit drains looked old enough when I bought the boat in 1996 that I would guess that they were original equipment. Because of corrosion and deformation of the neoprene, I replaced the through-hull fittings with new WC bronze items and the the valves with bronze/stainless ball valves. My boat had no fixed bilge pump when I got it so I installed two manual diaphragm pumps, one in the cockpit sole which is T'ed into the head intake line and another mounted inside the port cockpit locker (handle side of the pump in the cockpit) which I piped up to a 1" Marelon through hull fitting I installed in the forward side of the port lazarette locker. I also have a 500 gpm electric Rule pump in the after end of the bilge which is T'ed into the after bilge discharge line. Of course, with the larger discharge line in the after diaphragm pump moves alot more water than the forward one. I have not actually tested the output of the electric pump but I think that because of the long run and pressure head of its discharge line, its ability to move water is no greater than the after diaphragm pump.

I get very little water in the bilge in my boat anyway and I think that my arrangement might be overkill- the only reason I added the electric pump was to make my insurance company happy. If I ever got a hole below the waterline, I think that it is nearly impossible to install pumps on a CD 25 adequate to keep up with any but the smallest leak. If I were aboard and got holed, I could use the electric pump and hopefully crew member[s] manning the manual pumps while I worked on plugging the leak- I keep materials on hand for this purpose- DC plugs, toilet bowl wax, etc. If the boat is holed when nobody is aboard, well- I guess that is what the insurance is for...

Jim,

The pump discharge should always be well above the waterline. Have you considered running it out through a new hole high inside the motor well? The water would just fall out the bottom, and your topsides would be left unblemished. The motor could probably use a rinse now and then anyway.
