whats your take on the boat market?
I am curious on any comments on the used boat market. I have had a sign on our boat for about 6weeks and have recd one call. Of the 30 flyers, 21 are gone. The boat is a very high 8 or 9 condition and priced accordingly. With that said a nice family cruiser(34hunter)priced in the low 40's is an attractive boat for a family withneeds. with the stockmarket in the toilet and a stinky economy i probably just answered my question however check in with any comments. Strange thing is there arent hardly any boats forsale in our 500boat marina. craig

If your boat is priced appropriately (according to Bucnet values and the local market) it should sell eventually....sometimes takes a while. Does Hunter have an owner's website? Sometimes folks with smaller boats are looking to upgrade. That said, some boats just won't sell unless you give them to a broker (something I wouldn't do, especially with a Cape Dory...). Also, demand for sailboats is down in general...if it was a powerboat, it would have already sold...is that a sad situation or what? good luck!

It also depends where you are at!! If you live in the northwest, A good Cape Dory that is clean and well kept would sell in a minute!
A 33 footer was on the market for approximately five hours in our marina and was picked up by someone who owned a CD 28-and he sold his!
Junk will stay on the market a long time-and there is a lot of junk out there that folks are trying to get top dollar.

Good luck.craig wrote: I agree with Ken's comment, as least that the CD market in the North West is strong. I bougth the mentioned CD 330, and sold my CD 28 within 2 weeks. I still received phone calls asking if I still have the boat for sale and it has been over 4 months since we sold. I often get dock walkers asking about my boat and often asking if it is for sale. I always try and put as much spit and polish into any used item I try to sell. The boats I see that are not moving are usually in need of refit or are looking not matained.

Re: whats your take on the boat market?
I've recently talked to several brokers in my quest for a larger CD. Most brokers say that the stock market has hit the $125,000 and above market really hard, those are the prices where people were likely relying on market gains to pay for a boat. For boats priced in the $10,000 to $100,000 (ish) range (where most CD sailboats fall), the market is said to be slow but not dead. Layoffs, corporate cutbacks, etc. have more of an effect on this market than stocks.
I agree with other posts that location plays a big part, condition an even bigger part. I might suggest that a sign on the boat and some flyers is probably not enough exposure. You should consider a Soundings ad (if on the east coast) or a similar ad in local boating publications. You may wish to convert your flyer into a website as well and try to generate traffic that way.

Re: Location Location Location!!
For what it's worth, sailboats are selling like hotcakes in the Atlanta area. A local broker had to hire 2 more sales people to keep up with the used market. These are boats in the upper 20 to mid 30 foot range.Ken Cave wrote:

Re: whats your take on the boat market?...Internet
If you could advertise on the internet, you will be surprise how many peoples search on it. I Buy my Alberg and sell my Typhoon on the internet. Just a short story, i sold the Ty to a guy who live at 8 hours road from my house. If i did not post on the internet i'm sure the guy had never know i have a sailboat to sell.I live in Canada (near Montreal) and i sold to an American (NY). I bought my Alberg in an other state too.
I must add that i use the CD Board to sold my Ty,this board is fantastic.

Re: whats your take on the boat market?
Alittle more information. I have ads on the hunter website and boattrader.com. on the huntr site i have over 1000 hits. the internet is a nicespot tobuy and sell only beware how people describe things. i have bought our 34 hunter off the web, bought customized 98 vw bug off the web and sold it too, sold a 1933 buick streetrod to a guy from california who never looked at the car and also sold our 26ft sailboat to a guy from kansas that never looked at it. it does work. it seems things are just alittle soft here in minnesota. good thing i have two yrs to do this. incidently a smaller cape dory will be my next boat. the only thing i need to avoid is owning a fleet. craigcraig wrote: I am curious on any comments on the used boat market. hello Craig
I placed an advertisment in the Canadian magazine" Gam on Yachting" ... they also have a website" for sale list"It would give you very good exposure ... i just sold my Alberg 22 in a week !! had 18 calls in three weeks ... It seems their site is watched by quite a few ,both sides of the border ... the charge was only fifteen dollars and that's Canadian dollars!! john cd 33 Serenus http://www.koolpinescottages.com

Re: whats your take on the boat market?
My observation is that used Hunter's, Catalina's, and similar low-end ;i.e.low quality, boats are hard to sell. That's funny , because the new ones sell pretty good and at new prices.
You may have to lower your price. Check the BUC.

Re: Location Location Location!!
These are words to live by. Sold my CD28 in one day after posting it on this web page. Didn't even get a chance to put up a for sale sign. Prior to that, I had recieved several calls on the boat just due to a rumor that I might be selling. I had just bought a CD30 and had to stand in line to see if a prior bidder could handle the financing. I got lucky twice--got the boat I wanted, and sold my boat the next day. I believe my buyer had a similar situation with his CD25. GOOD BOATS SELL!!!

Re: whats your take on the boat market?
Thanks for most of your constructive comments. Some the other werent worth the key strokes made. I like the lines on the cape dory very much. Great construction? hardly. in our 500 boat marina the largest repair i saw last yr was a 10k new deck on a 31 cape dory. Maybe my hunter is more of a ford or chevrolet but hey, i cant imagine that kind of repair. i checked buc net and my price is well within the guideline. I still have two yrs to sell so nothing to worry about. i do want to buy a cd 25 in or around minnesota. dont need to sell ours so if your ready give me a call. 952-914-0880craig wrote: I am curious on any comments on the used boat market.
