Well, I have sold both of my Ty's, both were open day sailor's. One of them I have rebuilt from the bottom of the keel to the top of the mast. The bottom was peeled and all blisters repaired + barrior coated, new bottom baint. The entire boat has been repainted and the bildge has been regelcoated. Core problems in the boat have been repaired. All new teak toe and rubrails. I will add a 12' long S.S. rubstrake on the rubrails to protect the teak. All of the teak has been refinished or replaced. New wiring. The mast, boom and club foot boom have been painted. I have to finish painting the nonskid areas and assymble the boat. I am also installing a bildge pump. This model needs one badly.
The new owner could not be more proud. He feels like he is getting a semi-custom boat. It should hit the water in about 2-3 weeks. I will take lots of pictures and post on my web site. If I add up all of the cost (material and labor) to rebuild this boat in better then new condition, I find that it will cost about $10,000.00 to rebuild a Ty day boat. If you could find one for around $2,000.00 and put around $10,000.00 in it you would have a better than new Ty for around $12,000.00. Is it worth $12,000.00 to have a better than new boat that is not made anymore? What do you think? It has been a great project and I am looking for another Cape Dory to rebuild. The Buyer is a friend of mine that has sailed for 40+ years.

NEW TYPHOON OPEN DAY SAILOR, ALMOST!

Re: NEW TYPHOON OPEN DAY SAILOR, ALMOST!
Glen,
You're absolutely right, $12000 for one of these in perfect condition would be a steal, especially if one looks at similar new boats like a Alerion Express or a Doughdish or H 12 1/2. My '76 open daysailer has "an option" you or the new owners might consider - a mooring cover. SailorsTailor near Dayton, Ohio made mine for about $400 with hardware. They computerized the pattern so probably can make one in short order. Pictures of my "Aries" and mooring cover can be seen at this link:
