Trailer Sailoring a CD25

Post by Scott MacCready »

Trailer sailing a CD25 sounds like a fun way to visit new areas but in reality it's a lot of work. I can't figure out yet how people do it.
This past Friday, I moved from New Bern,NC to Presque Isle,ME and trailered my CD25 behind me. The trip itself was no problem (unless you count folding the tongue in half, but that's another story). However, preparing the boat for transporting it a big job. Unstepping the mast is not just pulling a pin and lowering it down to the deck...all the stays and shrouds need loosened, the sails and boom removed along with sheets, hallyards, topping lift, lazy jacks, jiffy reefing,...Then find some extra hands to help lower the mast.Drain the holding tank, remove the engine, Then secure everything to the boat so it doesn't flap around in the wind causing damage or stress. Several hours at the least unless I'm doing something wrong. I haven't hauled mine out of the water by trailer yet. I can't imagine getting everything sitting on the trailer just right; It takes the guys with the crane several attempts.
I haven't put her back into the water here in Maine yet. I'm looking for the right spot Down East and I'm debating whether to use my trailer to do it or have her lifted. Either way, I'm expecting a full days work getting all stepped and rigged again before I start sailing here.
I can't imagine all this work just to daysail or even a weekend. Seems like it would be better to rent a boat for the day if you wanted to try a new area once in a while.
Anyone want to buy a CD25 when it's time for me to leave Maine in November?

I would be interested in purchasing your cd25. What would the price be and do you have a diesel or outboard? If not I would be very interested in renting your trailer for 3-4 days to transport another cd-25 I've been looking at but can't afford to bring back to the Midwest due to the $1500 cost or transport. Let me know!
Thanks
Ed
