Typhoon roller reefing main....

Post by Chris »

According to the owners manual in order to reef the main you need to "pull" the boom out (i assume from the gooseneck) & then roll the sail onto the boom. Problem is that on my Ty the boom doesn't "pull" out. I believe it's frozen as the the aluminum casting has frozen to the stainless gooseneck.

Any suggestions on how to break it loose without breaking anything?

Thanks,
Chris

I strongly recommend jiffy reefing as opposed to trying to roller reef the main. Jiffy reefing is easy to install and simple to use. Reefing the main using jiffy reefing can be done very quickly (< one minute with some practice). You will get much better sail shape and performance when jiffy reefing is used. I have owned two Typhoons and installed jiffy reefing on each of them. Instructions for jiffy reefing are readily available--I've seen this subject described in the Owner's Manual for the Ty, other CDs and elsewhere. Good luck.

Jim is correct. Jiffy reefing is the only way to go.

Chris,

While "jiffy reefing" may be the route to go, in answer to your question, "how to break it loose without breaking anything?" I would suggest any of the lubricants you could purchase at a hardware store. Search the message board for those recommended by the fine contributors here. After using the lubricants, some light tapping to the area might be required. If it is as stuck as you suggest, there might be a great deal of corrosion, so be careful. I do not know if heat applied to the area (possibly a hairdrier) would work. Just keep at it though. I am sure that others, more experienced have better suggestions.

Chris,

I've used the roller furling on my typhoon and found it quite effective. If you can get it working, I would recommend trying it.

consider yourself lucky - now you have every rational, justifiable reason to switch to jiffy-reefing with no self-doubts!!!!!

You are correct this is how it is suppose to work however if you are not the original owner of the boat It may have been changed previously. the manufacter of the boom sells it both ways (fixed and spring loaded) I would check that it has not been replaced with the fixed unit for some reason. Below is a link to the manufacturer's website. I used this feature on my ty for the first time this past weekend and it worked flawlessly.

Cris, Do you have reefing cringles in the main? If you do I rigged a jiffy reefing system on my Main. It works great! One line is all you pull to reef. You then use ties to secure the extra sail to the boom and reef points through the cringles. Works great in heavy air. Good luck!
